Homeless man found stabbed to death in 12th Ave alley identified as longtime neighborhood resident

Investigators have identified the man found murdered in a 12th Ave alley as a 68-year-old man who lived unsheltered in the neighborhood.

Medical examiners say Paul Ewell died of “multiple sharp force injuries of the head” early on Saturday, February 10th. His body was discovered later that morning in the alley near 12th and Terrace by a passerby.

Residents of the area told Q13 that Ewell had been living in the area unhoused for years.

Police are asking anybody who can provide information to help the investigation to contact the SPD Violent Crimes Tip Line at (206) 233-5000.

The Homeless Remembrance Project said it would honor Ewell along with dozens of more recent deaths in a Women in Black vigil at Seattle City Hall.

His murder was the second homicide investigation for the East Precinct in February after the 28-year-old victim in a 20th and Jefferson shooting died of his injuries earlier this month.

Maybe there should be a Paul Ewell Park. So sad…

Paul was a kind man. He lived there for several years and never gives us any issues. Even though unhoused, he was our neighbor. I manage an apartment complex on that alley and got the call from homicide detectives Saturday, after he was discovered, looking for security footage, which we gladly provided. He definitely didn’t deserve to go that way. RIP
