The King County Medical Examiner says the man who died early Monday morning after being found down in the roadway at Volunteer Park suffered a fatal drug overdose.
Investigators have identified the man as William Gonya. The 67-year-old was found unconscious by a passerby just after 4:30 AM Monday near 14th and Prospect near the park’s water tower and was pronounced dead at the scene after Seattle Fire crews were unsuccessful in reviving him.
The medical examiner says Gonya died of “acute combined drug intoxication including fentanyl and methamphetamine.
We do not have additional information on Gonya at this time but the release of the death reports indicates any next of kin have been notified by authorities. In a 2011 Seattle case, Gonya provided a Naples, Florida address to the court.
Driven by a soaring number of overdoses involving fentanyl, Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell last year backed a $27 million plan for a Seattle drug crackdown, treatment and diversion investments, and a new “post overdose response team” at the Seattle Fire Department to try to slow the ongoing crisis.
