Standoff with robbery suspects inside First Hill apartment unit shuts down Madison

Five people were taken into custody and police had the area around Madison and Boylston locked down Thursday morning while dealing with a group of robbery suspects believed to be barricaded inside a sixth floor apartment unit.

SPD was called to the First Hill apartment building just after 4 AM after a man was reported down and bleeding from his head in the lobby of the highrise.

Officers were told multiple suspects were inside a 6th floor unit in the building.

Around 6 AM, police said they were “on scene in the 1400 block of Madison Street with barricaded suspects of a robbery” and asked people to “stay out of the area.”

According to East Precinct radio updates, there were multiple suspects among the seven people believed barricaded in the unit of Bellwether Housing’s The Rise on Madison affordable housing building.

Around 6:30 AM, police reported at least five had been detained and officers were working to clear anyone else found in the unit.

I live across the street from that building (watched it go up during COVID) and look down on the Boylston and Madison. It has been a train wreck since it opened. Fights nearly every other day or night. Dealers parked across the street in front of Seattle Academy classrooms with a steady traffic of people from that building to the dealers’ car and back. Management of the building is terrible. Someone punched out a window from the inside and glass fell to the sidewalk below. The window was left broken (not even covered from the inside) for two weeks until I called to let them know about it (especially the shards of glass perilously hanging out over the busy sidewalk, with no awning coverage, leading to Whole Foods). I can see many families living in the building, but the lack of management / concern from Bellwether leaves a very bad taste in my mouth.

Imagine living here. Lied to on move in that this was a safe place and I’m not from here so I believed it.

I’ve seen the exact same thing. Every day. When will Seattle leadership learn that you can’t let drug addicts run wild? I can’t even go on a walk with my young grandson.

In defese of Bellwether, landlords in Seattle have NO ACCESS to the courts to evict anyone for anything. Assult the manager? Shoot at your neighbor? Deal drugs? It’s a year. Our elected officials need to better support our court system and implement policies that give landlords the tools to manage their buildings.

Kind of accurate, but mostly misleading.
