‘Undetermined’ — Investigators can’t pinpoint cause in boarded-up Capitol Hill apartment building fire

Investigators were unable to determine what caused the fire early last Friday that ripped through a Belmont Ave apartment building that was supposed to be vacant.

The Seattle Fire Department said the Fire Marshal’s investigation officially ruled the cause of the two-alarm blaze that charred the boarded-up apartment building as “undetermined.”

A check of the building revealed nobody trapped inside during the fire and there were no reported injuries.

Recent similar fires in vacant buildings have stemmed from squatters and campers. A check of city records showed no recent complaints about trespassers in the building or violations of the city’s vacant building code.

CHS reported here on Friday’s pre-dawn fire in one of three neighborhoring Pioneer Human Services housing buildings recently purchased by the Downtown Emergency Service Center where the organization says it plans to demolish the structures and build ย โ€œa new Permanent Supportive Housing projectโ€ on the parcels.

No one bothers to report trespassers / squatters anymore, so you won’t find them in the list of police reports.
