‘A second car has hit Uncle Ike’s’ — Capitol Hill pot shop struck in second smash and grab burglary targeting same store in three days

Again! Thanks to a CHS reader for the picture and tip

A CHS reader reported an ominous incident Sunday morning — “A second car has hit Uncle Ike’s

Only days after the store was targeted in a nearly identical smash and grab burglary early Friday morning, a group of brazen thieves struck the 15th Ave E Uncle Ike’s for a second time early Sunday, smashing a stolen Hyundai Elantra into the same corner of the store damaged Friday and entering the shop to steal cannabis products and gear from inside the compromised building.

According to East Precinct radio updates, police were called to the collision at the corner of 15th and Republican around 2:45 AM. Eight suspects each dressed in black were reported at the scene removing merchandise from the store. Three vehicles were reported fleeing as police arrived. Officers were directed to not pursue as the cars sped through the city. One was last reported fleeing southbound on I-5. At least two of the vehicles including the smashed up Hyundai left at the scene were reported as stolen.

A wood barrier constructed to seal up Friday’s damage could be seen ripped from the building’s corner.

There were no reported injuries and no arrests.

The 15th Ave E Uncle Ike’s had been closed over the weekend after thieves smashed a stolen car into the shop early Friday. CHS reported here on the incident in which the driver had deftly guided the vehicle at speed in reverse between a utility box decorated with a portrait of Anthony Bourdain and a sidewalk tree to strike the building and rip open the storefront.

UPDATE: SPD reports ownership said Friday’s break-in did about $100,000 damage to the building including water damage from a broken pipeline plus the theft of about $5,000 in merchandise. Police say they believe the suspects were juveniles.

The Uncle Ike’s rip-offs come a week after the reopening of Capitol Hill pot shop The Reef after that E Olive Way shop was closed for three months and $300,000 in repairs from a smash and grab burglary that badly damaged its storefront in February.

While Seattle pot industry has been targeted for its cash-only transactions under federal restrictions, area owners say security practices have improved and the break-ins continue due to the value of the product and the relative ease of car theft.

Measures including better, more secure designs for storefronts can help but even additions like sidewalk bollards in front of The Reef were unable to stop the break-in. The Reef says it has been broken into three times in the past two years.

  1. I know the city has a lawsuit against Kia and Hyundai because their cars are so easy to steal and use in crimes, but at this point I think the pot shops (and other businesses impacted) need to file their own class action lawsuit against Kia and Hyundai. We need to shut the “kia boys” down by forcing Kia and Hyundai recall their 2011-2021 models and install immobilizers.

  2. The thieves know that SPD will not pursue so that does not seem like the best strategy especially at 2:45 am when the streets are fairly empty.

    • Spoken like someone who has never filed an insurance claim. BTW what kind of insurance company covers a Pot Shop? Hint: none of them, since the product is federally illegal. It’s more likely that they dont have any insurance.

  3. What no commentators here have addressed is the deleterious effect these events have on our neighborhood. Like Ike, don’t like Ike, Who cares? What I care about is the rising prevalence of smash and grab robberies in what should be and historically has been a relatively peaceful and secure neighborhood. No doubt the people committing these brazen robberies were armed, introducing still more harm to our community. This is lawlessness, and it’s effect upon our living environment should not be so callously discounted.

      • Hilarious! That’s all you can come up with? Your horizon is about as wide as the gap between the tree and the Bourdain themed utility box in front of Ike’s…..

      • We all should do something.

And by do something, I mean: Actually confront criminals. I did it just the other day. Guess what? He backed down. Most people here are so passive they roll over immediately.

      • I see…Vigilante. Trump likey.

You are incredibly stupid. Confronting ANYONE is a stupid stunt. ESPECIALLY around here.

Stumpy and I had a convo a week ago about that. 1st rule? Avoid possible trouble you can’t get out of. Box cutter to the jugular. Eyes. A gun maybe. On and on.

You ain’t a hero. You are incredibly stupid.

      • Yeah, how about revisiting the rules that define where pot shops are allowed to be located!? I’ve lived here long enough to have witnessed the impacts Ike’s and Ruckus had on 15th Ave and beyond since they opened…

      • Naw man. Review everything. That’s my position. Starting with security. They do the minimum and it ain’t enough. Kinda stupid for people who are not legally allowed to have insurance. My joint would be Fort Knox. And never near a school. Not my style.

      • One other thing?

I was not talking to you or about you. I was specifically pointing out Glenn. Have you “been here long enough to…” read my posts? Because anyone here on the regular will tell you I’m a mainstream progressive Bernie supporter. AOC too. Pramila.

They are not “pro pot shops anywhere”. Neither is prolly 89%+ of voters. So accusing me of being in the 11% is laughable except it’s a pejorative.

“How about” next time mind your own business with dumb arguments to support your story and ego. Nopers, you are embarrassing yourself in front of your God and everyone else.

How about you start a petition drive? Waddabout a civil war? All you people are begging for that…Right? So there. That’s my line of total BS to counter your measly impressions and self supporting BS. Neither is true. But it sure does sound correct.

        Don’t it?

      • I guess anyone here on the regular will just confirm that you’re a defensive little snowflake who likes to embarrass themselves on a regular basis….
