Limited damage in Sunday night kitchen fire in 100-year-old Capitol Hill apartment building

Firefighters handled a blaze inside a 100-year-old Capitol Hill apartment building Sunday night.

Seattle Fire says it responded to the fire in a unit on the fourth floor of Belmont Ave’s Charbern Apartments building around 10:20 PM.

The eight-story building dates to 1925, according to the county.

SFD reported the fire in the unit’s kitchen was extinguished by 10:45 PM with limited damage.

There were no reported injuries.

I looked at renting an apartment in this building years ago. The building itself was fine, but the block felt sketchy with all the halfway houses/homeless shelters/whatever they are nearby.

I lived in this building for several years, my friends did even longer. I also lived on the building at the other end of the block. No issues. It was a quiet block. They are just people. You can even say hi and talk to them and they might say hi back!

My grandmother and aunt lived in that building in the early 80s, and I’m here to say that block has always been that way. The more things change, the more they stay the same!
