Born in the lobby of a Tacoma Holiday Inn, smashburger joint Secret Burger Kitchen has opened its second location on Broadway.
The new burger joint takes over the space left behind in new construction in the 500 block of Broadway above Seattle U where Instagram-worthy Korean fried chicken joint Bonchon helped kick off the KFC trend on Capitol Hill six years ago.
Secret Burger Kitchen brings its smashed hamburger concept to the block with a pretty straightforward setup of patties, buns, and fries, plus — why not? — desserts including mini pineapple upside cakes. There are also hot wings for anybody missing Bonchon.
The expansion under burger entrepreneurs Gurpaul and Mandeep Sandhu makes the second SBK to open after the first fired up its grill in Tacoma. You’ll find SBK down south in the lobby of the Hosmer Street Holiday Inn.
As for Capitol Hill burgers, they remain an enduring part of the neighborhood’s food and drink mix. The most recent change in the Hill burger community saw new ownership including Inderpaul Kandola of the Seattle-area Can Am Pizza chain being lined up at Sam’s Tavern.
Capitol Hill’s burger world spans the globe. In 2021, E Madison’s Bombay Burger joined the mix with Paneer Burgers and Masala Fries.
Meanwhile, one of Capitol Hill’s longest running burger traditions is being celebrated on the other end of Broadway where the DeLuxe Bar & Grill has been running a limited return of its “Burgerama” tradition with deals on its hamburgers every Wednesday this month. Lucky you, there are two more May Wednesdays left.
Another Capitol Hill grill tradition will return this Memorial Day as the neighborhood’s Li’l Woody’s offers up free burgers Monday from 2 to 5 PM.
Secret Burger Kitchen is now open at 554 Broadway. Learn more at secretburgerkitchen.com.
