SPD releases body cam video of shootout in standoff with domestic violence suspect at E Madison apartments

The video shows police pursued the suspect at gunpoint before the man later opened fire

The Seattle Police Department has released video from the body-worn cameras of responding officers in last week’s domestic violence in an E Madison apartment complex that ended with one woman shot and hospitalized and the suspect found dead:

In the interest of transparency, the Seattle Police Department (SPD) is releasing the body-worn video from the officer-involved shooting on Friday, June 20. The department is also releasing the name of the SPD officer involved in this shooting: Officer Leonardo Bassi Rodriguez. This officer is on administrative leave. The following video shows patrol officers responding to a domestic violence related call in the 3200 block of East Madison Street. During the incident, the suspect retreated into his apartment and fired multiple rounds at the officers and victim. An SPD officer returned fire with his department firearm and struck the suspect.

CHS reported on the Friday morning incident and long standoff that began unfolding around 5 AM when officers were called to the area of 32nd and Madison and found a man assaulting a woman as she screamed.

Arriving officers reported a woman yelling for help as they arrived just after 5 AM when police reported the suspect began shooting and could be seen reloading. At least one Seattle Police officer also reported opening fire.

An officer in defensive position during the first minutes of response

In the video released by SPD, clips from the cameras on two responding officers have been edited to show how the incident transpired. In the video, officers arrive to find the man atop the woman at the entry to the apartment, The shirtless suspect quickly scrambles up a stairway as officers take defensive positions and try to help the female victim away from building. As the officer helps the woman to her feet, a shot rings out and police began shooting at an upper story window where they believe the suspect has just opened fire from. The woman collapses to the ground and police struggle for many minutes to find a secure way to help her from the courtyard as exchanges of gunfire continue.

After police were able to move her to safety, Seattle Fire treated the woman for a reported gunshot wound to the abdomen and she was taken to Harborview. SFD reported the 48-year-old was in stable condition.

Police found the man shot and deceased in the apartment later that day after a long standoff including SWAT.

The King County Medical Examiner has not yet released its report on the shooting and if the fatal injuries were self-inflicted or from SPD’s gunfire.

SPD Chief Shon Barnes said Friday the 53-year-old suspect had a violent criminal history including a conviction for a double homicide in the 1990s. In the East Precinct radio updates, dispatchers said the man was also reportedly a former Army Ranger.

Surprised no one has made the SPD video game. Ideal for recruiting.

Well at least the tax payers will not have to pay for a trial for that lowlife. Good riddance.
