Just got back from Salzburg, Austria and they have a simp painted chess board 30×30 ft and use 2ft tall chess pieces. The pieces get locked up at night with a chain.
When we went by this chess board there was always a crowd of 20 folks watching, some side games on benches. It looked like a super cheap way to great an engaging urban space
There is a giant outside chessboard (it has been there since the 1930’s) on the west side near the WPA wading pool, and 4 smaller chessboards built into the reservoir access hatch tops in the northern section of Cal Anderson Park.
