A woman was reported shot and a suspect was barricaded inside an E Madison apartment unit in a standoff with police early Friday.
The Seattle Police Department said it was investigating an “officer involved shooting” during the incident.
According to East Precinct radio updates, police were called to the Broadmoor Manor apartment building near 32nd and Madison to a reported disturbance involving a man and a woman yelling just before 5 AM.
Arriving officers reported a woman yelling for help just after 5 AM when police reported the suspect began shooting and could be seen reloading. At least one Seattle Police officer also reported opening fire.
The woman was reported down and hit in the building’s courtyard where SPD was finally able to enter and move her to a safe location along Madison west of the building.
Seattle Fire treated the woman for a reported gunshot wound to the abdomen and she was being taken to Harborview. UPDATE: SFD reports the 48-year-old was in stable condition.
Police reported the suspect remained holed-up inside an apartment on the east side of the building as SWAT and multiple units surrounded the area and engaged in a standoff through the morning.
Police had not reported the situation resolved as of 7:30 AM.
UPDATE 11:30 AM: The suspect has been located dead at the scene. It was not immediately clear if the fatal injuries were self sustained. Police were investigating.
UPDATE 5:05 PM: SPD has posted a brief on the incident with additional details including confirmation that the suspect was struck by police gunfire:
Seattle police detectives assigned to the Force Investigation Team (FIT) are investigating an officer-involved shooting during a domestic violence (DV) incident in Madison Park this morning.
On June 20, at 4:51 a.m., patrol officers responded to a DV-related call in the 3200 block of East Madison Street. During the incident the subject retreated into his apartment and shot multiple rounds at officers.
An SPD officer returned fire with his department firearm and struck the suspect, seriously injuring him.
The DV victim suffered a gunshot wound and officers got her to safety. The Seattle Fire Department (SFD) arrived on scene and provided her with medical treatment. SFD transported the woman to Harborview Medical Center in serious condition.
SPDβs SWAT team arrived and assumed tactical command of the scene. Police established a security perimeter around the residence and the Hostage Negotiation Team began speaking with the suspect via phone.
Ultimately, the SWAT team entered into the residence and found the suspect with no signs of life. SFD pronounced him deceased. The King County Medical Examinerβs Office will take custody of his body and determine the cause and manner of death.
The circumstances leading up to the shooting are under investigation, and FIT detectives will investigate the use of force. Representatives from the Office of Police Accountability and the Office of Inspector General were notified.
Per policy, the involved officer will be placed on administrative leave and the department will release video of the incident within 72 hours.
