Our Viaduct survey continues to collect responses. If you haven’t weighed in, it’s open until next Tuesday Feb 6 at 9pm.
Today, The Stranger’s Josh Feit called the Viaduct situation:
the most uncouth and embarrassing stint of governance and “leadership” (from the city council, the mayor, and the governor) that I’ve witnessed
The situation is so ugly that we don’t want to wait for the March election. We hope the results of our survey might somehow start moving the discussion forward sooner. Wishful thinking? If nothing else, it’s an opportunity for you to practice clicking your mouse.

The Seattle Weekly visits Remedy Teas this week and manages to not get all super excited like we did.
Remedy, with its sleek white-and-green interior and laboratory-cool wall of 150 canisters of organic tea (requiring a placemat-sized menu to decipher the offerings), doesn’t just make tea hip. You also get the idea that tea is a science.
The article is more feature than review and lumps Remedy into a budding Seattle tea trend.

CMJ has posted an interview with Sonic Boom’s co-owner Nabil Ayers with an interesting neighborhood tidbit:
So much of our success comes from being in a great city that is incredibly supportive of both music and independent business. When we opened our Capitol Hill store all of the “BOOM” phone numbers were taken in that part of town. We called everyone and ended up trading a customer his phone number for a gift certificate. Seattle rules.
Nice work, Seattle.

Apologies in advance. We’ve made the big time. Again. J made the mistake of talking to a journalist about Capitol Hill Seattle. But, enough about me, let’s talk about me! Watch for the in depth expose-ay soon in which…
- j and k are outed
- j admits working for the devil
- reporter struggles to make blogging fascinating
Keep your eyes peeled and get your Silly Putty ready for the picture. We can only hope the honor and excitement of appearing in the coolest newspaper in the city is worth the embarrassment.

Is it just us or has your RSS feed been all broked up and not working for days now?

With Seattle’s great pizza debate wavering between total non-story and non-story, we thought we’d take a look at the cold, hard facts. For whatever reason, robbery is up in parts of West Seattle — below are mappings of crime change through first nine months of 2006 vs. the same period in 2005.

Note that Capitol Hill has its own entrant in the robbery top 10 — census tract 77 might also find itself off a few delivery lists if this keeps up. Of course, like any good statistics set, there are confounding factors. The big changes could be a result of increased patrolling and attention in the neighborhoods between Roy and Union.
We’ve posted the full dataset on Swivel if you want to play. For other reports on crime — and lack thereof — by neighborhood, check out our Crime category.

We got the following comment tonight on our tip post:
I’m interested in finding running partners who live in N. Capitol Hill. I’m female, can run during the mid-day (and early morning) and can run anywher from a 9-10 minute mile. Am looking for people interested in running 4-5 miles (maybe more) a couple of times a week.
Would you (CHS) be willing to post this?
thanks,
running in Seattle

Dear running in Seattle, while this wasn’t exactly the kind of tip we were hoping to get on the tip post (think “Hey, we just saw Conan O’Brien order a double short soy over at Fuel”), we live to serve.

Sure, this kind of thing happens every day at Victrola or the produce aisle at Trader Joe’s. But having it go down on 19th Ave is special.
No salt, no pepper and not tall so can’t be me. You?

When you’ve got something the people wanna talk about, ride the wave. We’re setting a new record for comments on the post Volunteer Park Cafe still working out the kinks? — 8 so far and counting. Hey, 8 is good. We’re not the Slog, you know. You’re all worked up and excited about VPC. Go ahead. Let it out. Share your love, your concerns, your whiny bitching.
The breakdown of comments so far:
Love — 7 of 8
Concern — 3 of 8
Whiny bitching — 2 of 8
Ratios are looking good!
Also, because they’re new, VPC is way down the list on our Unspun neighborhood popularity scale. Vote em up! They’re currently hovering around #30. Headed to #1 with a bullet, I’m sure.

In December, we hosted the Capitol Hill Seattle Tourney — a gift to you, our beloved reader, as a celebration of our first year on the hill, a tribute to the neighborhood’s icons and, most importantly, an easy way to come up with ideas for something to write about during the holidays.

The CHS Viaduct Survey is now open
Little did we know that the contest would become a testament to both the (nearly!) indomitable spirit of humankind and the remarkable tenacity of typhus-carrying critters.

Finally, the victors — and the runners-up — have received their just rewards. We teased about this last week but procrastinated. Delivering walnuts, it turns out, isn’t something you can just squeeze in. You need to plan it out. It takes effort.
The squirrels in both Volunteer and Interlaken Park were, typically, modest and demure. In fact, no individual squirrel would come forth to accept the champion’s portion of the 10 lbs. of unshelled English walnuts. So we left some in a pile of stumps in Interlaken and the rest under this tree in Volunteer Park. Yum!
Meanwhile, we haven’t heard a squirrelly peep from the 2nd place finishers — though, according to UPS, there was one Stranger staffer willing to come forward to claim the prize. Mr. Nipper, did you enjoy your nut bucket? Yum!
Again, congratulations to all of our competitors and good luck in 2007’s tournament.
