10th Ave East road work continues with big detour

Here is a brief reminder that this weekend will again see a rather significant detour as the busy repaving project on 10th Ave East drags on. No less an authority than The Roanoke Tavern says they’ve been told the work should be completed by the end of the month. Raise your hand if you’ve been naughty and utilized the unsanctioned detour route to Boyer by driving by the WRONG WAY DO NOT ENTER sign in front of Seattle Prep? That’s what we thought.

The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) and its contractor will work this weekend, September 18 and 19, on the 10th Avenue E street improvement project.  Crews will build a concrete lane on the east side of 10th from the E Miller Street intersection to E Boston Street.

Crews will start at 7 a.m. Saturday. At 8 a.m. crews will start breaking concrete and removing the existing pavement.  The contractor anticipates substantially completing this work by Sunday evening.

10th Avenue E will be closed to northbound traffic except for transit from E Boston Street to E Roanoke Street. The southbound lane will remain open.

A substantial detour will be in place for northbound traffic. Vehicles will be detoured at the north end of the Broadway commercial district and directed to use E Roy Street to Belmont Avenue E to Lakeview Blvd E to Boylston Avenue E to E Roanoke Street.

E Miller Street and E Lynn Street will be closed at 10th Avenue E. Eastbound traffic on Miller and Lynn streets will be required to turn right (south) at 10th Avenue E. There will be local access only on Miller and Lynn streets between 10th Avenue E and Federal Avenue E.

Police officers will be on site to keep traffic moving. Pedestrian access to all businesses and residences will be maintained.

Meanwhile, neighbor Jeremy writes:

Is it just me, or does the newly resurfaced southboud lane on 10th Ave E between Miller and Boston seem a little bumpier than what one might expect in a newly resurfaced road?  I’m not expecting the smoothness of asphalt, and no doubt it’s much better than what we had, but I’m a little surprised with the finished product.  I called SDOT and they referred me to Josh, the contractor, who said that the southbound lane is completed for the most part and that everything seems to be fine from his standpoint (big surprise).

Be careful what you ask about, J. You sure you want more repaving?

I know it was posted in an earlier post somewhere, but when are they working on the strip from Boston southwards?

No more street reconstruction planned for 10th — or anywhere else on Capitol Hill — for quite a while. See http://www.cityofseattle.net/transportation/docs/pave/100208_Paving_11x17_07thru15_FullCity.pdf

…Neighbor Jeremy, the new surface seems fine to me.
