Fire and police respond to Trace building following reported suicide attempt

Medics were called to the Trace Lofts North condos Saturday night for a reported suicide attempt inside a unit of the building near 12th and Madison.

According to Seattle Fire radio dispatches, medics were attending to an unconscious 25-year-old male found with what is believed to be a self-inflicted stab wound to the chest and were preparing to transport the man to Harborview.

CHS respects the sensitivity of covering suicide and believes it is an important community issue to include in our news reporting. We attempt to cover these stories by sharing the facts in a responsible manner that provides information about what is happening on the streets and in the community around you.

Here are two resources to help those in need: National suicide-prevention hotline: 800-SUICIDE. Local Crisis Clinic: (206) 461-3222.

I work in emergency services and many times a week, if not many times a day, we have suicides and suicide attempts. Because out culture and media view these as strictly private matters, no one ever knows about suicide until they are confronting depression personally or someone close to them tries (or succeeds) at ending their own life. It breaks my heart that all of these people think they are alone in their suffering.

I know you report on these few “public” suicides *because* they are more public (happen in a dense area, someone jumps, etc.), but I want to say thank you for bringing these few instances to light and reminding people there is help out there.

In my personal and professional opinion, suicide is an unbelievable epidemic in this area. And I really wish more people who are struggling with depression knew they are not alone and there are many, many people who want them to live. The Crisis Clinic is wonderful and they are always there to listen. And, if someone out there feels like they are at the brink, please dial 911.

There’s no record of a dispatch to Trace Lofts on Seattle.gov 911 Dispatch yesterday. I think you mean Trace North, which is at 1414 12th.
