Don’t worry if you see — or hear — an apparent emergency response at Broadway’s light rail construction site Friday morning. It’s only a drill. Here’s how a safety drill at the site in 2011 looked. Here are details on Friday’s event from Sound Transit:

At least three Hill businesses still have healthy bottom lines under new paid sick leave rules

One University of Washington study showed that a majority of employers are ignoring the new regulations. An industry think tank’s analysis has dubiously determined that 50% of employers “believe the law will increase their costs.” CHS talked to three Capitol Hill business owners who said implementing Seattle’s paid sick leave regulations hasn’t hurt their bottom line much at all.

Everyday Music had paid sick leave before the ordinance, and manager Josh Hansen said he was glad to see the measure pass.

“I think that’s one of the basic rights, for employees to be paid for their sick leave,” Hansen said. “If business owners aren’t willing to provide that for their employees, I think it’s a good idea to force them to.”

First ever Seattle Gorilla Run starts on Capitol Hill

(Image: SoundersFC on Instagram)

This weekend, the first home match of the Clint Dempsey era will have Sounders fan going, um, ape. And that’s about as much monkeying I can do to segue into a September event planned for Capitol Hill organized by Sounders supporter club Gorilla FC and involving many, many people running around Capitol Hill Kong style. Take it away Kevin:

My soccer crew is cosponsoring an event in September that I was hoping you could drum up some interest to.
This September 14 is the first annual Seattle Gorilla Run!
We are launching from Von Trapps, and it will have a 5k diameter all around Capitol Hill.  People register with a donation.  A gorilla suit is included in the registration fee.  They then stop at our partner locations all over the hill and get raffle tickets within the time limit, and return back to post party at Von Trapps.  The money raised is for the Mountain Gorilla Conservation Fund.
There will be a bunch of Gorilla suited peeps running around the Hill that day!
We are looking to really pump up the registration of this event, and get the community involved!

“Mimosas With Mama” featuring 30 Minute-(ish) Hairspray

Mimosas-Poster_webIf you’ve not seen the drag show “Mimosas With Mama” featuring “30 Minute-(ish) Hairspray” you’ve only got a few chances left and… you’re late.

“Mimosas With Mama” will soon be presenting a 30 minute-(ish) version of the stage and screen hit “Dreamgirls” and it will most definitely be wonderful however, missing their comedic interpretation of “Hairspray” would be a crime.

Full disclosure, I’m the lighting guy for “Mimosas With Mama” so I do have somewhat of a vested interest in its success.  Not for the money mind you (I’m a volunteer), but because the show is just so shockingly good, I want it to succeed and grow.  After you see this show, you’ll understand and agree.

When “Mimosas With Mama” first debuted at the Grill on Broadway it was just a drag show, a great drag show with excellent performers and Mama Tits, the best comedy drag hostesses to grace a stage in Seattle but still, “just” a drag show.   I’m not sure whose idea it was to deconstruct the stage version of “Hairspray”, the John Travolta movie musical and the John Waters original film then overlay that with a soundtrack by Disco Vinnie and choreography by Tipsy Rose Lee but the result is nothing less than astounding.  Don’t take my word for it, in a recent review by the Seattle Gay News, the Associate Editor said, “You really do have to see it to believe it! But once you do, you’ll be glad you did… This is not a drag show – it’s a production. And as far as I’m concerned, “Mimosas With Mama” is the place to be on Sunday afternoons in Seattle”.  The review goes on and on for a full-page and is really worth a read.  Here’s a link: http://sgn.org/sgnnews41_25/page24.cfm

When I was asked to sit in on a rehearsal in their new location at the Unicorn/Narwhal I was first captivated by the carnival atmosphere of the venue (I could go on about how awesome the basement theater is so I’ll save that for another time), what really struck me was the difference the staging made for “Mimosas With Mama”.  The Grill on Broadway was cramped, overly bright and the stage practically nonexistent. The cast was so confined in the space that they really couldn’t shine.  Most of the performers in this show are over six feet tall (in heels) and all are dancers so a cramped space had to have been very difficult to say the least.  Now, at the Unicorn/Narwhal they have room to breathe and really perform.  Discussions came up at this rehearsal as to how to “stay in the light” and the only sweet spot was right in the middle of the stage so Tipsy Rose Lee was having to modify choreography to keep the action in this tiny spot.  Given that, I volunteered my lights, follow-spot and time thus removing this dilemma and I’m so glad I did.  I get to see this show weekly from behind the spotlight and every week the show and the response from the audience brings me great joy.  Heck, Seeing Isabella Extynn St. James, Bukkake London St. James and Tipsy Rose Lee in the opening number would be enough for anyone to want to see the show weekly!

The acts in the first half of “Mimosas With Mama” are different every week so every time it’s essentially a new show, the second half is normally a 30 minute-(ish) version of a musical and given their “30 Minute-(isn) Hairspray” they are well worth seeing again and again.  At $15.00 and a free mimosa, it really is a show you can enjoy over and over!

The “30 Minute-(ish) Hairspray” segment is set to close the end of September.  Get your tickets now if you want to see these last shows since they will likely sell out.  “30 Minute-(ish) Dreamgirls” with guest star Robbie Turner Is set to dĂ©but in October.

Visit the website www.mimosaswithmama.com for tickets and be sure and check out the calendar page for more info on specific shows and show dates.

This Sunday’s forecast is calling for a sunny 72 degree day, perfect conditions to lay out a blanket in Volunteer Park and listen to some free (family friendly) music. Seattle Teen Music is hosting their third annual Party in the Park this Sunday at the Volunteer Park amphitheater. The concert will feature at least eight young bands starting at noon and wrapping up around 6 PM.

Jon Sherrer co-founded Seattle Teen Music with his daughter in 2008 with the aim of getting more young musicians on professional stages. The two started Party in the Park as an end-of-the-summer showcase for bands who played STM shows throughout the year. This year Seattle Teen Music has put on over 100 concerts with some 500 teen musicians.

Attention sinners, saints — Witness ready for first service on Broadway

(Image: Alex Garland for CHS)

The secret, Gregg Holcomb says, is to slap the mint. Not grind it. Not mash it. Just break the oils free gently. There’s a certain way to make a proper mint julep. It may not be Canon. But it is certainly gospel.

Thursday night, barring any flood of biblical proportions, Witness is set to make its official public debut on Broadway bringing Capitol Hill’s craft cocktail culture to its main strip.

CHS first reported on longtime Hill barman Holcomb’s plans for a “new Southern” cocktail bar in May as work first began to transform a short-lived fish and chips joint at 410 Broadway E into a church-inspired house of spirits. “You’re offering your testimony, your presence — there is kind of like a revelation standpoint,” Holcomb said about the Witness theme when we talked to him earlier this year. Cops chase down robbery suspect in Cal Anderson

An incident that began near 10th and Pike as a man apparently stole a tip jar from a nearby business ended in Cal Anderson Park with the suspect splayed on his belly, handcuffed and yelling surrounded by police cruisers and some officers who reportedly ran blocks to the scene from the East Precinct at 12th and Pine to assist in the arrest.

UPDATE: According to the SPD report on the incident, the suspect had been smoking marijuana in front of Caffe Vita when he was asked by staff to move along. Staff said the man became angry, walked into Vita and grabbed all of the cash from the tip jar and left, $36 the richer.

According to police radio dispatches, an SPD parking enforcement officer first reported that two or three people were attempting to detain a man at 10th and Pike who eventually was able to get away and walk north to the park. UPDATE: According to the report, the suspect also dropped the cash before leaving. Minutes later just before 7 PM, a man matching the suspect description was spotted in Cal Anderson. As police contacted the man and attempted to take him into custody he struggled with an officer who called for backup, prompting the large response including the officers who arrived on foot from the nearby police station.
