- JANUARY: Seattle workers at the city’s biggest chains hit the $15/hour minimum wage mark…. David Sedaris spends a week at the Broadway Performance Hall…. Parking will cost you more on Capitol Hill at night but less on Capitol Hill in the morning… the first Seattle’s Democracy Vouchers are delivered… Design reviews for two projects that will displace neighborhood favorites — the Redwood and Annapurna — are scheduled. Visit often… The Annex Theatre celebrates 30 years.
- FEBRUARY: The 10-barrel Redhook Brewery and Pub is planned to celebrate its opening on E Pike…. new commercial tenants in E Pin’s massive Excelsior building plan to begin opening for business…. The 20-month project to overhaul a busy section of 23rd Ave from E Union to E John is scheduled to end. Work on Phase 2 (S Jackson to Rainier Ave) is expected to begin in late 2017 while work on Phase 3 (E Roanoke to E John) does not yet have a start date…. Century Ballroom celebrates 20 years.
MARCH: In the first quarter of 2017, SDOT has said it will install new paid parking zones in the Pike/Pine area east of 12th Ave.- APRIL: A new solution for Seattle bike share including electric bikes and service in the CD could begin rolling out…. the state will NOT be spraying for gypsy moths again after 2016’s successful eradication program.
- MAY: The Paul Allen-backed Upstream festival will take place in Pioneer Square and could pose booking challenges for July’s Capitol Hill Block Party.
- MID 2017? The Capitol Hill Chamber hopes to launch the Capitol Hill Alliance and a massively expanded “Business Improvement Area” across the neighborhood…. The Harvard Exit office+restaurant transformation should be complete… A new RPZ 32 will fill in the blocks below Broadway and around Capitol Hill Station… The Seattle Asian Art Museum is expected to close for an 18-month seismic overhaul and expansion…. Judkins Park Station is slated to break ground with East Link bringing light rail service to the Central District by 2023.
JUNE: North Capitol Hill’s Fire Station 22 is slated to reopen in a new $12 million-ish building… Elysian is planning to begin its “brewing amphitheater” overhaul… UPDATE: Construction should be underway on Cal Anderson’s new all-gender restrooms.- JULY: Seattle’s secure scheduling law requiring big-chain workers to be paid extra for short notice schedule changes and on-call shifts goes into effect.
- SEPTEMBER: Capitol Hill’s Meany Middle School is slated to reopen after a $17.8 million overhaul… Sadly, Seattle Public Schools will face a budget deficit if things can’t get sorted out in Olympia.
- NOVEMBER: Seattle Mayor Ed Murray will face a reelection vote… longtime City Council member Tim Burgess will not.
LATE 2017? Work to streamline the route for Metro 8 is planned to begin in phases during the year… Construction on the E Pike Pagliacci/Macrina project should be underway… HALA’s zoning changes — including new height limits on Capitol Hill — should be hammered out… City People’s has a plan to remain open through 2017 before planned redevelopment… Construction on the 23-story senior housing tower next to the Frye on First Hill should begin… Demolition and early construction for the Washington Convention Center expansion in downtown Seattle could begin bringing 133,000 truck trips to the base of Capitol Hill… First Hill’s Town Hall transitions its programming to venues across the city to make way for seismic overhaul… The Broadway Whole Foods and the 16-story apartment building it will be part of is looking more likely for early 2018.

Electric bike share from the CD is going to encourage me to frequent Capitol Hill businesses soooo much more often. Can’t wait. If the 8 were fast and reliable that would help too, but I’m not holding my breath with that project…
