‘Carrying the torch for our transcestors,’ Trans Pride Seattle 2023 rallies for its 10th anniversary with a June celebration in Volunteer Park

Ten years after the first Trans Pride Seattle marched into Cal Anderson Park, veterans from that June night in 2013 and first-timers joined hundreds of people in Capitol Hill’s Volunteer Park to represent the strength of the city’s TwoSpirit, Trans and Gender Diverse community and allies.

“For 10 years, weโ€™ve never let anything stop us from celebrating Trans joy, life, and loveโ€”and this year is no different!,” the organizers at the Gender Justice League wrote. “In a year of 450+ proposed anti-trans bills, spaces like Trans Pride Seattle are more important than ever. TPS continues to honor and carry the torch of our transcestors who created Pride as a means of cultural communion and social dissent.”

Friday night’s Trans Pride marked the 10-year anniversary of the rally and celebration and the return of the event to June after the challenges of the pandemic delayed the revival of the gathering.

In 2022, Trans Pride Seattle rallied to gain its footing again with a September event in Volunteer Park as it set its course to return as part of the traditional June Pride celebrations in Seattle.

Friday, that return was accomplished with hundreds including Washington’s state Sen.ย Marko Liias, Montana transgender legislator Rep. Zooey Zephyr, and a lineup of singers, dancers, and performers gathering at the stage of the new Volunteer Park amphitheater that has become an important gathering point for Pride events including Saturday night’s Seattle Dyke March which, like Trans Pride, is moving its annual celebration into the park.

Trans Pride Seattle was the start of a weekend of Pride celebrations across Capitol Hill and the city with the Broadway street festival PrideFest and Seattle Dyke March on Saturday and Sunday’s big downtown parade. You can find our pictures from Saturday’s Pride fun here on the CHS Facebook page.
