Police say victims in Capitol Hill shooting were bystanders caught in 11th Ave shootout

In a live stream video by Tim Brooks that captured the aftermath of the shooting, police can be seen shell casings found along 11th

The Seattle Police Department says the two people shot early Saturday morning on Capitol Hill were bystanders caught in the crossfire of a shootout along 11th Ave.

CHS reported here on the just before 12:45 AM Saturday shooting that caused nightlife crowds to scatter into nearby bars and clubs including the Wildrose and Sam’s Tavern and sent two people to the hospital.

Seattle Fire reports a 29-year-old man and a 33-year-old woman were treated at the scene and transported to Harborview, each in stable condition. Police say the victims were bystanders and not involved in the altercation that led to the burst of gun violence.

According to police, security video revealed the shootout happened as a group near the southeast corner of 11th and Pike pursued a male spotted near the southwest corner near the Wildrose and A Pizza Mart and opened fire. The male then returned fire.

Police recovered more than 50 shell casings in the area in front of A Pizza Mart and near 11th and Union, according to SPD radio updates.

According to radio updates, one of the suspects was wearing a black ski mask while another wore a red bandana over his face.

There were no reported arrests.

SPD’s Gun Violence Reduction Unit is investigating.

The incident follows May’s shooting at 10th and Pike outside the Cultura nightclub that sent three to the hospital.

11th Ave has been a center of gun violence in the area. In February, an intoxicated 16-year-old who had been kicked out of A Pizza Mart for using a fake ID opened fire on security outside the venue.

In October 2024, a 25-year-old woman was shot and killed on 11th. The next night, two people were shot at a memorial for the woman on the street.

Public safety measures pursued in the area by public officials have included advocating for more police officers, the addition of SPD Real Time Crime Center cameras, park activation, and catenary lights over streets including Nagle Place and 11th Ave.

Saturday’s shooting came on a deadly weekend of gun violence in the city. Sunday night, a shooting during Bite of Seattle left three dead and four injured. Police say the Seattle Center gun violence also appeared to be a shootout involving multiple firearms.

UPDATE: A live stream captured the aftermath:

“Carl,” are you astroturfing for Flock or Palantir or something? there’s a national dialogue going on right now about abuse of surveillance cameras. Also these dudes WERE caught on camera. they were wearing MASKS.

This is likely a gang beef, both the pizza mart and bite of seattle. gang violence is present and horrible in all major cities. cameras don’t prevent it, only years of hard work isolating and removing them.

Cameras absolutely help immensely. The whole camera debate is so childish.

Your first statement is demonstrably wrong. To call this childish suggests you’d rather accept the sales pitch that conforms to your preconceived world view than the real world implications. Is this how you conduct the rest of your life?

Contradicted by statistics accumulated by many urban trials over the years. Wishing doesn’t make it so. Maybe you’re confusing reality with movie tropes.

it’s also a not American strategy for mass surveillances. If businesses and private citizens want it? Fine. But not the most corrupt gang in American history.

People really want to see the crime that they can’t stop after it’s already happened. Just for fun I think. Like just watch crimes if we can’t stop them is the idea.

yeah, video has never been used in a courtroom to convict people. or are you opposed to punishing criminals as well?

Yeah – when you have video, you don’t need to go to a courtroom because the person pleads guilty because there’s video… *side eye*. But hey, at least our police chief doesn’t live anywhere near Seattle!

Give police access to footage in real time or on demand as opposed to having to go through the often lengthy process of getting a warrant for camera footage that is owned by a third party business or individual. Also we have already paid for it and if we were to take a vote your radical pov would be in the vast minority of people that live in the city.

Smoothtooperate

Normally? Investigations are not held up by a warrant. People are forthcoming. Your argument is moot.

Of course they were. Police this dang neighborhood – remove that gas station that allows people to loiter – and these are solvable issues. NYC doesn’t have gunfights every weekend.

BECAUSE WE ARE RICH!!! *head desk head desk*

Nobody is robbing homes and weed stores. IN MISSISSIPPI! It’s a poor ass state. Along with all the high crime states. Not exactly bastions of wealth and success.

CA. makes the list because it’s huge and populated.

So now we conflate property crimes with murders? You exceptional learners get off the reservation pretty fast. Into lala land

Can’t tell if you’re a troll or just ignorant. NYC’s gun crime incidents far out number Seattle. It’s not even close. Not just every weekend, but shootings happening there daily.

But in the bright side, NYC like Seattle, is seeing huge drops in violent crimes, with both cities approaching historic lows in recent years.

The police station is a block away and they never seem to do much to prevent these situations. Where were the cops that supposedly walk around? Why not SPD cars parked on corners? So much more SPD could be doing but they refuse and claim they are “understaffed”. Most of these officers don’t even live in Seattle and don’t care about the neighborhood.

The police force is short over 500 officers. Just think if two of them could monitor cameras and direct where to focus patrols. Having access a day or two later to a third parties footage is too little too late.

It’s on the hands of this administration and city hall. Between past events and certainly this weekend with downtown and the Hill… Tremendously insufficient police presence for crowd control during large events and ensuring public safety. No cameras…In exchange for public square hangings of the ones we catch.

I really feel a couple lynchings in the public square would put a screeeching halt to property damage!

Install and activate the cameras that the City Council approved. Had that plan been followed police may have tracked down and arrested the shooters. Now next weekend those violent gun wielding thugs will be at the heart of party central as an ongoing threat to the people out to eat good food, enjoy drinks and meet people. Our Mayor’s reason not to act on this is wearing very thin very quickly. Make Seattle safer and give our limited supply of police tools to do the job better.
