Saturday, you’ll find Lohan Prado playing his guitar in Cal Anderson. A new busker program at the park started last week and puts musicians like Prado to work bringing tunes and a relaxing mood to the Capitol Hill park in an effort to help the busy public space stay a happy and healthy place.
On Thursdays, longtime Capitol Hill and Seattle busker Pasquale will be in the park. On Tuesdays, “folk-n-blues for social change” guitarist and singer Thomas Hubbard will perform. A roster of other performers will rotate through every day of the week into summer, from noon to 2 PM. You’ll find the musicians near the park’s shelterhouse and bathroom complex.

CHS reported here on the ongoing 2020 Cal Anderson community effort backed by the city to make small investments in cleaning up the park and bringing events and activities into the space. The effort was launched prior to last year’s CHOP occupied protest and the encampment sweeps later in the year but revived as the city looked for ways to address safety issues in the popular park beyond policing and emergency services. Small efforts like community clean-ups and new tree lighting have followed.
Seattle Parks says buskers have been a key part of its concierge program but were prohibited under state COVID-19 guidelines until a few weeks ago as the county moved into Phase 3.
They’re not currently looking for new musicians to join the program — the city says it already has more applicants than gigs — but there may be hope for more buskers soon as the parks department reactivates concierge and busker programs in parks across the city.
