Hollingsworth ramps up District 3 public safety meetings

Seattle City Councilmember Joy Hollingsworth has ramped up her schedule of community public safety meetings as she meets with communities across District 3.

The representative will meet with constituents on public safety matters again Tuesday night only two weeks after a previous meeting in the series last week held in the North Capitol Hill area. CHS reported here on that session including debate over a plan for a “Technology Assisted Crime Prevention Pilot” that would include deploying cameras and acoustic gunshot location technologies in hot spot areas of the city.

Hollingsworth’s office says the meetings are part a trio of sessions planned in a row, each in a different area of the district.

Three injured in shooting at Capitol HIll’s Garage Billiards

Three people were injured late Saturday night in a shooting at Capitol HIll’s Garage Billiards. Police say one victim was in critical condition.

According to East Precinct radio updates, police and Seattle Fire were called to the Broadway business south north of Madison just before 11:30 PM to a report of multiple shots fired.   • Montlake school work site arrest: A man was taken into custody Friday morning after a brief standoff in a work trailer at the Montlake Elementary School construction site. Police were called to the area of 22nd and E Calhoun around 8:00 AM to a disturbance involving a recently fired worker armed with a small pocket knife who had entered a work trailer at the site, according to East Precinct radio updates. As others cleared out of the trailer, police were able to contact the man and he was reported in custody without incident. There were no reported injuries.
  • Broadway bike cop drug stops: The East Precinct’s bike officers are running “narcotic activity stops” along Broadway, according to the department’s “significant incident reports.” In one report from last Friday, SPD says the stops “located four subjects engaging in narcotics use.” Two of the people stopped were “identified, cleared, and released” while another had an outstanding warrant and was arrested and transported to King County Jail. The fourth man was observed “holding a bag of suspected narcotics.” “He stated that the substance was ‘clear,’ and he was arrested,” SPD reports. “Clear” is typically slang for crystal methamphetamine. Officers found the man was also carrying fentanyl and more meth. He was booked into King County Jail for investigation of drug charges.
  • Safeway shoplifter threat: Police were called to the 22nd and Madison Safeway last Tuesday for an early morning incident involving a pair of repeat shoplifters who threatened a manager with “a taser/knife type of weapon” —
    At 0602 hours, an adult male and female were shoplifted items out of grocery store. As they were walking out with a basket full of unpaid for items ($200), the manager tried to grab the basket. The male suspect pulled it away and produced a taser/knife type of weapon and told the manager that if he didn’t back off, he would get assaulted. The manager backed away and the two suspects drove away in a white chevy pickup truck with rubbish in the back. The manager said these two suspects are frequent shoplifters and provided evidence.
    There were no reported injuries and no arrests.
  • Bus driver strikes pedestrian: A woman was left conscious and without life threatening injuries after she was struck by a Metro bus driver Monday morning at 18th and Cherry. According to emergency radio updates, police and Seattle Fire were called to the corner just before 8 AM to the reported collision and found the injured woman sitting upright and conscious. She was treated at the scene and taken to the hospital for further treatment.

Nagle Place ‘shank’ stabbing sends one to hospital

A woman was rushed to the hospital in critical condition after a stabbing Saturday morning on Nagle Place west of Cal Anderson.

Police and Seattle Fire were called to the street near the park’s fountain around 9:30 AM where the victim was reported down and uncious.

A woman man in critical condition from stab wounds was reported transported to Harborview by Seattle Fire, according to police radio updates. UPDATE: SFD says the victim was a man in his 30s.

The suspect used a “shank” in the attack, according to police radio.

According to radio updates, police were able to learn the identity of the alleged attacker and were searching the area for a man matching his description. Continue reading →

Police investigating new Seattle hit and run attacks after homeless man run over while sleeping on North Capitol Hill sidewalk — UPDATE

A homeless man who survived being run over while sleeping on the sidewalk along Capitol Hill’s 19th Ave E appears to have been intentionally targeted.

Seattle Police say they are investigating two similar attacks that took place within hours across Seattle early last Saturday morning that sent two people to the hospital after a driver drove onto sidewalks and struck them.

In the Capitol Hill attack, a 39-year-old man suffered lower body injuries and was rushed to Harborview after being run over while sleeping near 19th and Prospect in front of a stretch of businesses including the neighborhood’s Windermere real estate office on the block mixed with single family-style homes and a small business strip.

“The victim was asleep on the sidewalk when he was struck by a vehicle,” SPD’s brief on the February 17th, 3:50 AM incident reads. “The suspect vehicle ran over the victim’s legs and then fled the scene.” Continue reading →

‘Suspicious death’ investigation after man found down outside First Hill’s Town Hall — UPDATE

Seattle Police are investigating after a man was found dead outside Town Hall on First Hill early Thursday morning. SPD said it was investigating the death as suspicious.

Seattle Fire was called to the scene just after 5 AM to a report of a man who appeared to be in his 50s down outside the building at 8th and Seneca with a head injury. According to SFD radio updates, the man was found dead and the coroner was immediately called to the scene.

Police were taping off the area as homicide detectives gathered evidence and traffic was closed in the area during the response.

The suspicious death comes as investigators have identified the victim in a Saturday, February 10th in an alley off 12th Ave as a longtime homeless resident of the area.

Homicide detectives are investigating a suspicious death after a body was found in First Hill Thursday morning.

Shortly after 5:00 a.m., officers responded to a report of a deceased male in the 1100 block of 8th Avenue. Police arrived and located the victim lying in an alcove of a building.

Officers secured the area until Homicide detectives and members of the Crime Scene Investigation Unit arrived. The King County Medical Examiner responded to the scene and will determine cause and manner of death.

Homeless man found stabbed to death in 12th Ave alley identified as longtime neighborhood resident

Investigators have identified the man found murdered in a 12th Ave alley as a 68-year-old man who lived unsheltered in the neighborhood.

Medical examiners say Paul Ewell died of “multiple sharp force injuries of the head” early on Saturday, February 10th. His body was discovered later that morning in the alley near 12th and Terrace by a passerby. Continue reading →

Thousands raised to help tattoo artist recover from Capitol Hill assault

Hundreds of donors have rallied around a Capitol Hill tattoo artist who must undergo medical procedures and surgeries after a nighttime assault earlier this month as she walked near Cal Anderson on the way to the light rail station.

Danielle “Bunky” Oyster detailed the apparently random Saturday, February 10th assault that left her with facial injuries in a fundraiser plea that has raised thousands to help the tattoo artist’s recovery. Oyster told KIRO the situation has become even more dangerous as she is now fighting a flesh-eating bacterial infection after the lacerations and stitches to her head. Continue reading →

Stupid cupids: Thieves fail to boost huge safe after smashing Valentine’s flower-filled truck into E Madison jewelry store

Thieves nearly ruined Valentine’s Day as they smashed a flower-filled U-Haul truck into Madison Park Jewelers but had to leave the store’s massive safe behind in a messy getaway from police early Tuesday morning.

Seattle Police says a security alarm system and video showing the box truck and its flowery cargo repeatedly smash into the building brought officers to the scene just before 6 AM. Arriving officers reported the storefront destroyed and a group of suspects and the truck still at the scene.

As police moved into position, the suspects fled in the U-Haul, dragging a large chain behind it in a cascade of sparks as it sped west on E Madison. At the burglary scene, police also found the area strewn with Valentine’s flowers. Continue reading →

Police arrest man after E Pike shots fired incident

Police say a man was arrested after firing shots and pointing a handgun and people near Harvard and Pike early Saturday morning.

According to the SPD brief on the incident, police were called to E Pike around 1:20 AM Saturday to a report of a man yelling who reportedly pulled the gun out in a nearby alley and fired several shots into the air before pointing the gun at people. “No one was hit by any rounds, but one victim said a round was fired in their direction,” SPD reports.

Arriving police took the 44-year-old into custody, and recovered a handgun from the suspect. Police also found 9mm casings and possible damage to a nearby building at the scene.

SPD says the suspect was booked into King County Jail for investigation of assault. There were no reported injuries.
