There were no reported injuries and one arrest as a repeatedly contested Central District corner was the scene of a shootout involving multiple assailants Thursday afternoon. The evening brought further gun violence in the city as two teens reportedly exchanged gunfire outside the Aki Kurose Middle School. A 17-year-old was taken to Harborview Medical Center in critical condition and a 14-year-old taken into custody, police say.

In the Central District incident, an exchange of gunfire around 4:15 PM at 21st and Union involved at least two shooters with one suspect on foot fleeing the area southbound, according to eyewitness accounts and multiple 911 callers. Another shooter was reportedly the driver of a gray Chevy Malibu that police continued to search for as the collected evidence at the E Union shooting scene.

There were no reported injuries at the 21st and Union scene. According to police radio, one suspect returned to the scene and was taken into custody without incident.

The corner was the scene of a deadly gang shootout in 2019.

Thursday’s shootout comes amid an ongoing wave of gun violence across the county in 2021. According to police radio, multiple 911 callers provided information from the scene including suspect descriptions, and vehicle descriptions including license plate information.

Patrol the corner. Prohibit any loitering. No more people hanging out in cars for hours. Clean this place up.

I bet if the parents could go to jail for negligence, they’d control their kids better.
