CHS Pics | Sidewalk fest a party for 15th Ave E’s new businesses and old institutions

DSC06008 DSC05962DSC05943The 15th Ave E Merchants Association held its annual sidewalk festival Sunday, welcoming a new start for one business in the commercial village. Meanwhile, a core element of the street is also lined up for some behind the scenes changes.

Sunday’s party had 15th Ave E businesses spilling onto the sidewalk with treats to share from Shop Agora’s paella to the live band playing in front of the Hopvine.

All treats were free at Sugar Plum, Makini Howell’s vegan desert and sweet shop that replaced her longtime cafe on 15th Ave E. We missed out on meeting Stevie Wonder, however, as the frequent Howell supporter dropped by the party Sunday afternoon.

The businesses of 15th Ave continue to shift but without some of the major tectonics found elsewhere on the Hill like Pike/Pine. Eventually, there will be at least one pot shop at 15th and Republican. A Rudy’s has opened. And the banks and financial services players on the street are making some large — and small — changes. The Salal Credit Union has pulled out of the 15th Ave building slated to make way for a new four-story apartment development. An insurance office on the same block has shuttered. The Wells Fargo branch inside the Safeway is expanding and getting an overhaul. And the old Key Bank — once slated for demolition itself — is being lined up for an interior refresh according to permits.

Meanwhile, one of the buildings at the center of 15th Ave E’s smaller-scale development is in the middle of some behind the scene changes. Monday, the City Council approved legislation allowing easements on the Fire Station Seven building to be transferred to Environmental Works as the nonprofit community design center completes a deal to purchase the property from co-owners Capitol Hill Housing and the County Doctor. The three community-driven entities moved into the old firehouse together in the ’70s. EW and director Roger Tucker continue to be headquartered in the building that’s ground floor is now home to boutique Station 7. In 1971, when Environmental Works first took on preserving Fire Station Seven, Tucker tells CHS the groups were up against an effort to acquire the property for an expanded QFC.

Broadway Chronicles | Rainbow jaywalking

A young man so enamored with the sights and sounds of the nearby club scene failed to notice he was jaywalking in one of Capitol Hill’s famously festive intersections Saturday night. Fortunately for the man, the alert driver was able to stop short. Unfortunately, the dramatic hood slide by the hooting and hollering pedestrian did appear to leave a bad impression on both the car and driver. No injuries and only minimal damage were reported.

Broadway Chronicles is a new semiregular series featuring the work of Capitol Hill street photographer Tim Durkan.

CHS Pics | Punk Rock Flea Market at the Punk Rock Post Office

Never mind what you’re selling. It’s what you’re buying. Here is a look inside — and out — at this weekend’s Punk Rock Flea Market held inside the “Punk Rock Post Office” at 23rd and Union. We found pretty much everything you’d ever need for sale including Star Trek prayer candles and custom punk vests. We also encountered a disturbingly strong Donald Trump presence — though the little man seemed to have found his comeuppance thanks to a local food truck.

Even the block of the Central District the market was held on was up for grabs — or, at least, it was. “One of the last remaining large developable sites” in Seattle began its major real estate marketing push this summer. We’ve heard a rumor or two but there’s nothing to report, yet.

To keep track of what’s next for the flea market, check out punkrockfleamarketseattle.com. Lots more pictures, below. Continue reading

CHS Pics | Why are you topless in Cal Anderson?

(Images: Alex Garland for CHS)

With reporting by Alex Garland
Last Sunday, Seattle’s major media salivated over coverage of Go Topless Day events in other cities around the country — and the world — but skipped over a small gathering right here on Capitol Hill.

Getting partially nude in the middle of Cal Anderson to show “women have the same constitutional right that men have to go bare-chested in public” (and with the blessings of “spiritual leader” Rael), a few women and their male supporters exercised their freedom in the summer sun Sunday.

“If I should cover up, make everyone cover up. Gender equality is very important,” Kaleena Anderson told CHS. She made the trip from Bremerton for the event. While breastfeeding at a salon, Anderson said she had someone cover her and her baby physically with a salon drape. “It’s your issue not mine,” she said.

“There’s worse things in the world to focus on than who’s showing their nips,” Kayla Goullaud told CHS.

The organizer of Sunday’s event who identified himself as Joe M — in the Hard Rock t-shirt, above, told CHS the group decided to move the event to “a more friendly location” and chose Cal Anderson after being hassled by police last year in Westlake Park.

CHS Pics | Summit Block Party 2015

Here’s a look at Saturday’s 2015 Summit Block Party — it’s a view of Capitol Hill culture, art, and music armies of developers desperately want to embrace and extend. The fourth annual day of music and art matured, reportedly, in 2015 under new leader Adam Way. “On the whole, there is a (push) for quality,” Way told CHS, with a wink. “I don’t want people to feel like the free admission wasn’t worth it.” Of course, this year there were still irate neighbors, some occasional bursts of loud and obnoxious rock, and various shenanigans that are likely to accompany a grassroots music festival in the middle of some of the densest blocks in the densest neighborhood in the PNW. Like the lined-up-for-upgrades Summit Inn apartment that partly inspired it, Summit Ave is also going to see more change. In the meantime, its street festival manages to grow along with the rents.
