The vacation of public right of way for a major new double tower apartment development next to First Hill’s Town Hall Seattle is bringing neighborhood improvements including a new public plaza plus new financial support for the Seneca St. cultural center.

Legislation finalizing the way for the city to hand over the alley space between Seneca and Spring in exchange for a $5.3 million roster of public benefits was approved earlier this week by the Seattle City Council’s transportation committee including D3 rep Joy Hollingsworth. Man dies in shooting inside First Hill apartment building

A man was shot and killed overnight inside a First Hill apartment.

The Seattle Police Department reports officers attempted CPR as Seattle Fire arrived at the scene inside a first floor unit of the Tuscany Apartments. SPD says the 40-year-old died at the scene.

According to East Precinct radio updates, police were called to the Seneca at Summit apartment building just before 1:45 AM to reports of someone yelling to call 911 followed by a report of gunfire.

Arriving officers found the man down inside the unit and suffering from a gunshot wound to the back.

Witnesses reported a male fleeing from the scene. He was described as a black male, wearing all black clothing with a bicycle. Continue reading →

With First Hill home finally set for demolition and redevelopment, Seattle arts nomad Love City Love in search of new start

Nomadic Seattle arts venue Love City Love is searching for its next home as the end of August brings the end of its stay in a former First Hill dental office on land set to host a mass timber apartment building.

“Love City Love emerged as a blank canvas for the creative community to convene,” the LCL mantra goes. “We believe continuing to craft this alternative is not only possible but crucial to keep art and culture alive and thriving in our city.”

CHS reported here in early 2023 as Love City Love founder Lucien Pellegrin was making preparations for the Seneca dental office building to host the next run of the venue that has grown around its ability to make new gathering spaces in buildings slated for demolition or redevelopment. After a pandemic pause, Seattle nomadic arts venue Love City Love is back with a stop on First Hill

Love City Love is back on the move with a new home on First Hill as the nomadic Seattle arts, music, and community venue awakens from a pandemic-induced hibernation.

“We’re moving forward and things are coming back,” founder Lucien Pellegrin tells CHS. “That was the only reason Love City Love paused. We would have been marching along the whole time.”

In appropriate fashion, the latest Love City Love incarnation will celebrate its opening with a Valentine’s Day party on February 14th.

As usual for the venue and its ability to make new gathering spaces in buildings slated for demolition or redevelopment, the terms of Love City Love’s stay on Seneca Street will be indefinite. Continue reading →

Proposal for First Hill mass timber high-rise seeks to reach even higher

The COVID-19 crisis and the resulting economic fallout could snuff Seattle’s latest development boom. Or the change might be more complicated and less predictable.

One of the more interesting projects in motion before the crisis is readying to return to the public development process with a plan that has grown in scale despite the uncertainty.

Developer Pryde Development and the architects at Clark Barnes have revised plans for a “mass timber” high-rise planned for First Hill to grow the design to 18 stories — adding six more floors to an already ambitious project.

“The project has elected to proceed with an 18 story, Type IV-A construction type,” the developers write in their updated proposal for the planned development that will replace a one-story 1949-built dental office on Seneca. “The structure will be mass timber, which requires a modular, gridded structural system,” they write. “The wood structure must be fully protected (covered) with gypsum wall board, therefore CLT wood veneer will be used as an interior expression of the wood material.” Continue reading →
