New owners at Oddfellows: Linda Derschang’s unofficial Capitol Hill High cafeteria has been sold to the growing neighborhood Queer/Bar business family adding the popular cafe to a Pike/Pine mini-conglomerate including The Cuff and the recently acquired Elliott Bay Book Company.- Belmont encampment sweep: The mayor’s office followed up on its promise to prioritize outreach and removal of Capitol Hill’s largest homeless encampment.
- Sanctuary city: Kshama Sawant’s legislation made Seattle a “sanctuary city” for abortion with new restrictions on cops and prosecutors.
- New SDOT leader: Greg Spotts, Mayor Bruce Harrell’s pick to head Seattle’s Department of Transportation, believes in “15-minute” cities that are more walkable and bikeable while moving forward on making streets safer for cars and electric vehicles.
- Hubbell Place murder: A late July assault at an encampment near I-5 is now a murder investigation after the victim died of his injuries.
- M-pox: Hundreds lined up Saturday for a pop-up monkeypox vaccine clinic at Seattle Central. CHS reported here on the limited amounts of federal vaccine allocations coming to King County and how the local bathhouse community is advocating for more. Public Health says it provided 500 doses at Saturday’s clinic and the county is working on distributing an additional shipment of vaccine it received Friday. - COVID: The “living with it” trends of spring have continued with a downward count of reported cases dropping about 20% per week in Seattle. COVID-19 hospitalizations in the city have remained steady, however, at about 6 per day.
- 911: Police arrested the suspect in a knife attack in front of the 23rd and Union PCC, took a man into custody after a long standoff in a tree after a brick tossing melee, and investigated this terrible mix of gun violence and a dog attack on First Hill.

- New openings: El Lugar Mexican grocery — and bar! — is now open on E Pine while the Studs piercing studio chain has expanded to Seattle with an E Pike location.
- Record heat: Capitol Hill saw temperatures reach into the 90s and set new records.
- Art: Capitol Hill artist Jesse Higman shared A Collaborative Landscape in Cal Anderson Park while the Seattle Asian Art Museum welcomed a new exhibit.
- The Blue Angels were back. People had things to say about it.
- Capitol Hill Block Party returned for the first time in three summers.
