Fire damages former Queen Sheba restaurant tabbed for overhaul — UPDATE

Thanks to a CHS reader for this picture of the response filling the intersection of John and Broadway

Seattle Fire knocked down a stubborn basement fire before it could more damage to a shuttered Capitol Hill restaurant Saturday afternoon.

Crews were called to the former Queen Sheba restaurant just after 1 PM to a report of smoke and flames coming from the two-story building in the 900 block of E John. Fire trucks and emergency vehicles filled the area around Broadway and the Capitol Hill Station light rail facility during the response.

SFD said it was able to bring the basement fire under control and there were no reported injuries. The Seattle Fire Marshal was investigating what caused the blaze.

CHS reported here on the closure of the longtime Ethiopian restaurant tucked into a converted 125-year-old house just off Broadway. The property’s owner said the plan was to rehab the building and find a new restaurant to take over the space.

UPDATE: Witness reports described two men seen possibly leaving the Sheba building after the fire was first spotted. Police took at least one person into custody near the fire scene.

911 | Capitol Hill explosion scare, man drives self to hospital after weekend Broadway shooting — UPDATE: 14th Ave E fire

See something others should know about? Email CHS or call/txt/Signal (206) 399-5959. You can view recent CHS 911 coverage here. Hear sirens and wondering what’s going on? Check out Twitter reports from @jseattle or join and check in with neighbors in the CHS Facebook Group.

  • “This blew up as we drove home,” John Richards wrote about the Friday incident in Burien. “My family was in the car. We saw the ball rolling down the street and was able to avoid. I don’t know what it was but it blew up, our ears are still ringing and my kid is really traumatized.” (Image: @djjohnrichards)

Explosion scare: Early Sunday morning brought a scare about a mystery explosion to Capitol Hill residents. Multiple people reported hearing a blast just before 1 AM in Northwest Capitol Hill following a string of incidents involving explosive devices around the Seattle area over the weekend including a bomb blast that exploded Friday night in Burien among passing vehicles and the car DJ and Capitol Hill bar owner John Richards and his family were riding in. Richards and his family and others in the area of the Burien explosion were shaken but not seriously injured. That incident remains under investigation. Saturday afternoon, three explosives were found and two men were arrested in a DUI incident that created an hours-long I-90 closure after authorities chased down the suspects on a Mercer Island overpass. One suspect in that arrest reportedly was trying to light an explosive device with a blow-torch but was tackled by police before it could be lit. Two more explosive devices were found in the suspect vehicle, police say. That investigation was also reported as ongoing and so far not connected to the Burien explosion. Early Sunday morning, multiple people in the CHS Facebook Group reported hearing a loud explosion in the northwest area of Capitol Hill. A check of Seattle Fire dispatches shows there were no units sent to the area for any fires or injuries at that time. Seattle Police dispatch logs do not show any related reports or property damage investigations at that time. According to East Precinct radio updates, police did determine that a reported shots fired incident near MLK and Union a few miles away was related to a vehicle loudly backfiring. Police were also investigating a gunfire incident even farther away in Seward Park at the same time involving around 30 shots fired.

  • Broadway shooting: Police say a man was shot multiple times before driving himself to the hospital in a shooting late Saturday night near Marion and Broadway. Police say the 32-year-old man arrived in a bullet riddled car at Harborview just before midnight suffering from at least four gunshot wounds. Police say they recovered security video that shows the incident in the 1300 block of Marion but provided no further details of what lead to the shooting. Police recovered eight .40 caliber shells at the scene. No update on the victim’s condition was provided.
  • First Hill bank robbery foiled: A First Hill bank robber gave it a go Friday afternoon but came up short in his effort. Police say the man entered the Bank of America at Madison and Minor just before 2 PM, approached the teller, and demanded money. “The employee refused to give the suspect money, so the suspect exited the bank on foot,” police report. Officers checked the area but had no success locating the suspect. No weapons were seen or implied. There were no injuries and no arrests.
  • UPDATE — 14th Ave E Fire: Seattle Fire was called to an apartment fire on the ground floor of a four-story building on 14th Ave E near John just before noon Tuesday. SFD says it was able to get the fire extinguished in about ten minutes and limit the damage mainly to the one unit. There were no reported significant injuries as crews remained on scene to help clear the building of smoke.

  • Armed robbery investigation: Capitol Hill area mini-marts have been hit with a flurry of armed robberies including one heist last week in which multiple customers in the store had their wallets and phones taken. Last Friday night around 10:20 PM, police were called to the Circle K on 12th Ave near Seattle University where the store and multiple customers were robbed at gunpoint. One wallet containing an Apple Airtag was briefly tracked to E Pike but police were unable to locate the stolen property or the suspect. The King County Sheriff’s Guardian One helicopter also briefly helped in the search. Under 30 minutes later, the 7-Eleven at 15th and Denny was also help up at gunpoint where police say the suspect stole cash from the register along with a wallet and phone. The suspect was described a black male in his 20s, skinny and around 5’10”, wearing a black tracksuit and black ski mask, and carrying a black handgun with an extended magazine. Police said the suspect description was the same as an armed robbery last month at the E Madison 7-Eleven. There were no arrests and no reported injuries.
  • Gas station knifepoint robbery: Tuesday afternoon brought another armed robbery to an area market but the suspects in this heist used a knife not a firearm in the crime. SPD says officers were called to the 76 gas station at Broadway and 10th Ave E just before 3:30 PM. “Officers quickly arrived on scene and began their investigation finding that two suspects entered the gas station, walked to the counter and robbed the gas station clerk with a knife,” SPD says. Police say the suspects grabbed around 500 dollars and left the area on foot. They were last seen southbound on 10 Ave E. There were no arrests and no injuries reported.
  • Chemical toilet fire: Seattle Fire was called out but couldn’t do much about a chemical toilet set on fire near Volunteer Park early Thursday morning. The plastic toilet stall was reported on fire just before 12:30 AM at 10th and Prospect. Seattle Fire did not investigate the fire’s cause. There were no reported injuries.

911 | Pike/Pine brawl, Powell Barnett camp sweep, Central District Walgreens truck crash burglary, and a 19th Ave E tailgate theft

  • Pike/Pine brawl: Police made one arrest after being called to a massive brawl at the 76 service station early Sunday after reported gunfire amid overnight Pike/Pine crowds:
At 0500 hours uniformed officers responded to a large fight disturbance in the parking lot next to a gas station (Broadway Av./E. Pike St.) There was a large group of people there that broke up as patrol vehicles were arriving in the area. Call update was that there was also a gunshot heard, and a male subject was now laying on the ground. officers located the down subject and determined that he was not shot. He did however have several scrapes/bruises and bloody nose/lip. The subject advised that he was assaulted by two subjects who stole his GLOCK 9mm, registered to him. During the altercation a round was fired but no one was struck. This now became a robbery investigation. Officers located a subject in Cal Anderson Park matching the suspect description. Subject was detained and identified.
Police says the suspect was in possession of two loaded firearms, including the victim’s 9mm handgun taken in the robbery. The suspect’s firearm appeared to have been modified to a fully automatic action with an extended magazine, police say. The suspect was treated for injuries then booked into jail.
  • Powell Barnett camp sweep: Police assisted in the clearance of a new asylum-seeker camp that formed in the Central District’s Powell Barnett Park. SPD says the clearance took place without incident Wednesday around 7 AM in the MLK Way park. The camp group was related to the asylum seekers cleared from the park earlier this year in an ongoing issue around funding for shelter for the refugee groups from areas like Congo, Angola, and Venezuela. The asylum seekers have been living in a series of temporary camps and county and donor-supported motel rooms while the campers go through the long process of immigration and trying to establish legal status in the country.
  • Cal Anderson stabbing: A victim in a Cal Anderson Park robbery early Wednesday morning was stabbed in the face, SPD says. Police were called to a tent in the park around 2 AM to a report of two suspects trying to take the victim’s belongings. The victim was reportedly stabbed during a fight to hold onto their possessions. Arriving officers were able to provide aid to the victim and recover the property. Seattle Fire transported the victim to Harborview in stable condition.
  • Central District Walgreens ATM crash burglary: Police recovered a stolen truck after thieves rammed the storefront of the 23rd and Jackson Walgreens early Tuesday morning and tried to rip out an ATM from inside the business. SPD was called to the drugstore just before 4 AM to reports of a white pickup truck that had sped away after ramming into the storefront and returning to try to pull out the cash machine with tow straps. Police found the vehicle abandoned about three blocks away. A K9 track of the area was completed but no suspects were immediately located. SPD has not said if thieves made off with any cash.
  • 19th Ave E tailgate theft: The victim in a strange Capitol Hill auto ripoff that apparently isn’t that unusual reached out to CHS about his loss. The CHS reader reports his pick-up tailgate was ripped off from his truck while parked Wednesday along 19th Ave E. Apparently, tailgate theft is a growing problem with the part easy to steal and fetching hundreds and sometimes thousands of dollars. You can try to stop thieves with locks or by etching your vehicle information into the metal. If you happen to see Scott’s tailgate, holler.
  • New info in Sunday Broadway robbery shooting: SPD has released new information about the incident Sunday at the Broadway Walgreens that ended with a robbery suspect fleeing on a scooter after being shot in the hand. Police say the suspect attempted to steal cash from a shopper inside the store who reportedly shot the suspect in the hand. Police say all parties fled the scene.
  • More Broadway gunfire: Police investigated Broadway gunfire early Saturday in an incident stemming from a argument on the street:
At 0032 hours, call received by a resident reporting he had been shot at. The suspect fled westbound on a Lime scooter. Officers arrived and located one .40 FCC. The victim reported that the suspect bumped into him on the sidewalk. The victim used some choice words to tell the suspect to watch where he was going. The suspect fired one round towards the victim then fled southbound into a telephone pole then westbound on E Thomas St.
Police say no victims were located and no property appeared to have been damaged. There were no reported arrests.

  • Broadway ‘Kool-Aid Man’ break-in: Somebody broke into E Broadway’s CorePower Yoga studio this week by busting through the wall, as one officer reported via East Precinct radio, “like the Kool-Aid Man.” SPD was called to the 500 block Broadway E business early Monday to the reported burglary. ‘Undetermined’ — Investigators can’t pinpoint cause in boarded-up Capitol Hill apartment building fire

(Image: Seattle Fire Department)

Investigators were unable to determine what caused the fire early last Friday that ripped through a Belmont Ave apartment building that was supposed to be vacant.

The Seattle Fire Department said the Fire Marshal’s investigation officially ruled the cause of the two-alarm blaze that charred the boarded-up apartment building as “undetermined.”

A check of the building revealed nobody trapped inside during the fire and there were no reported injuries. Continue reading

Fire chars vacant Belmont apartment building lined up to be demolished to make way for new ‘supportive housing’ project

Thanks to reader Micah for this picture of the fire

An overnight fire charred a vacant Capitol Hill apartment building lined up to be demolished to make way for a new housing project for “chronically homeless adults.”

Seattle Fire reported the 4:20 AM blaze as a two-alarm fire as flames leapt from the emptied Granberg Apartments onto a neighboring structure in the 1700 block of Belmont.

The fire raged through the three-story, 1908-era apartment building quickly and, with the roof at risk of collapse, SFD said it was taking a defensive position “by pouring water on the fire at a safe distance away from the building.”

More than an hour later, crews were still working to completely put out the fire as SFD warned residents and businesses in the area to close windows and doors to try to prevent smoke from entering.
