As Voodoo arrives on Capitol Hill, Seattle’s Mighty-O Donuts faces bankruptcy — UPDATE

As a doughnut invader from the south prepares its sweet assault on the city with a Capitol Hill beachhead, a veteran of Seattle’s fried dough scene is financially struggling.

Federal court documents show Mighty-O Donuts filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in July in a case where the filings continue over the more than $1 million in liabilities the small Seattle company carries.

CHS has asked the company for more information about its future and its employees after the filing that came as Might-O founder Ryan Kellner saw profits at his four cafes and production facility dip to near zero this summer.

In its filing, the company blames the pandemic and national economic issues for its troubles saying “a combination of factors, including the adverse effects of the pandemic, increased costs due to inflation, decreased sales, and high fixed lease costs” led to the bankruptcy.

“Mighty-O experienced modest growth for many years until the COVID-19 pandemic in
2020,” one document reads. “The pandemic severely impacted Mighty-Oโ€™s ability to operate a financially sound business. The company experienced a significant drop in customer traffic and a decrease in employee availability, preventing it from operating at full capacity. Additionally, Mighty-O faced major disruptions in supply chains, vendor services, and rising costs due to inflation.” Continue reading

The Central District’s Raised Doughnuts has completed its move into a brand new space. Only a block away from its original home, the new Raised is part of the ripple of change rolling through the old Midtown block.

Raised Doughnuts is now open at 24th and Union, part of the Midtown Square development — 428 market-rate and affordable apartment units, a quasi-public central plaza, and a huge underground parking garage, plus a mix of organizations and businesses the developer Lake Union Partners says will better represent the surrounding communities than the original plans for a big chain pharmacy.

“Itโ€™s been a challenging 8 months but weโ€™ve finally reached the end of the build out and we canโ€™t be happier!” owner Mi Kim said in a recent social media post about the opening. “So ready to make you all some doughnuts and cakes and so excited to see what this new space brings us and our community!”

CHS reported on the plans for Raised’s move back in September 2020 with original plans for a 2021 debut. Following the pandemic and construction delays, the new Raised Doughnuts cafe is now ready with plenty of room to sit down and enjoy or get in line to take your box away. The new Raised is also being prepared for big plans including including doughnut and cake classes, Kim said. Continue reading

The Central District’s Raised Doughnuts is already two years old and making big plans for a new home by the time it turns three.

Raised owner Mi Kim confirmed her plans to move the artisan doughnut shop across the street as part of the mix of businesses planned to be part of the new Midtown Square development when it completes construction and opens in late 2021.

“This new space is actually what I had originally wanted from day one,” Kim writes. “I showed I Miun (business partner) stock photos of the vision before I even had a recipe. And this new space has all the elements! Our current space was exactly what we needed at that time, and we are going to miss it!” Continue reading

Plan for a Capitol Hill doughnut bar gets one last push with Pettirosso pop-up

Screen Shot 2014-10-30 at 2.31.40 PM Screen Shot 2014-10-30 at 2.30.46 PMThe plan to bring a doughnut bar “inspired by Tom Waits and New Orleans nightlife
to Capitol Hill will get an extra push this weekend with aย 9th & Hennepin pop-up at 11th Ave’s Cafe Pettirosso.

CHS told you earlier this month about the early plans fromย Justin Newstrum to create a joint serving fresh, hot doughnuts, coffee, and booze on Capitol Hill. The fundraiser behind the project stands at just under $5,000 with only a few days left to go on the $16,000 goal Newstrum is hoping to raise to fund the start-up of 9th & Hennepin. You can make your contribution here if you’re interested in helping get the business started and scoring one of the backer gifts.

Sunday night from 6 to 10 PM, you can meet the doughnut entrepreneur and sample his creations — and, hopefully, get inspired to add your dollars to the kitty:

As one last hurrah before my kickstarter ends, the fabulous ladies at Cafe Pettirosso have agreed to host a pop-up up night of fresh-fried donuts at their space on Capitol Hill this Sunday, November 2nd. Cafe Pettirosso will be open for their normal business hours Sunday night, serving their normal menu with Happy Hour all night long. In addition to that, we’re crafting a short menu of our donuts to fry to order. Donuts will be free, but *cash* donations will be accepted, to be donated to the kickstarter project. For those still on the fence about supporting the project this will be an excellent opportunity to come try a taste of what you’ll be getting when we open.
