028 Barber School is growing on Capitol Hill — Your head can be part of the curriculum

(Image: 028 Barber School)

This new Capitol Hill shop does more than fades and crops. It is helping create new barbers every day on 12th Ave. If you’re up for having your head be part of the course materials, you can help out by getting a $15 cut.

“The new location we recently opened is a barber school, not a barber shop,” the 028 Barber School tells CHS. “We currently operate four 028 Barber Shop locations, and this new facility is specifically designed to train aspiring barbers in the area.”

CHS reported on the new 028 project in September as the facility took over a former workout studio on 12th Ave inside theย Trace Lofts building, part of continued growth for the six-year-old company and owner Bill Shin. It is the second 028 location in Seattle joining shops in Woodinville, Federal Way, and Redmond with traditional barber services focused on walk-in customers.

But the 12th Ave 028 is different. Shin is hoping to train and help grow Seattle’s haircutting skills. Continue reading

Henryโ€™s Gymnasium is now open on Boylston.

CHS reported here in September on the latest plans for the facility filled with โ€œhigh-energy musicโ€ and โ€œcrystal chandeliers throughout” and an expansion of the Henry’s Gym concept that launched in 2023 in Lower Queen Anne.

“Henryโ€™s distinctive new location in the 100-year-old Boylston Garage is more than just a gym,” owner Glen Swain said in a press release announcing the opening. “Weโ€™re community-oriented and focused on truly celebrating diversity while honoring the human spirit and community history through art.โ€ Continue reading

Capitol Hill’s The Wildrose is turning 40

Capitol Hill’s The Wildrose is turning 40 and the longest running lesbian bar in the United States is throwing itself a birthday party all December long:

Forty years ago, the Wildrose opened its doors- and weโ€™re still here. Through all the challenges, and celebrations, this bar has stood as a space for you all to call home. Weโ€™re here because of you – the generations of patrons, staff, and supporters who have danced on these floors, shared their stories, and fought to keep this space alive. In a time when so many queer spaces have disappeared, weโ€™re deeply grateful to still be here.

Shelley Brothersย andย Martha Manning have co-owned the ‘Rose since 2005, although both were working and drinking at the bar years before taking it over. December 30th, they will celebrate the long run on E Pike with a big bash.

Along the way, they plan to fill the month with celebrations of the Wildrose’s eras. To start, swing by for ’80s week — and a beer:

The bar opened its doors in Dec. of 1984 and only served beer and wine at the time. So come in for a cold one, we love our local beer selection! Be sure to ask for the beer on the secret menu!

The Wildrose is celebrating 40 years on Capitol Hill at 1021 E Pike throughout December. Follow @thewildrosebar for updates.
