ArtAche market always brings together great music acts with unique local vendors… what can we look forward to for November’s event?

Lindseys will be bringing the hardest sounds of fast pop punk garage death. Let me put it this way… if you threw your phone in a blender with some blood, sweat, and a dash of reverb, you will get Lindseys. Capitol Hill booking curator Mamma Casserole (Mamma’s Cave) says she’s going to play a “casserole of pysch, soul, jazz, garage, and far out world sounds. Plus, Dj Bobbi Rich (Easy Bake Coven) is bringing big bag of tricks and treats. You just might hear anything & everything out of her, whatever it is, we know it will be witchy. This could be everything from Grace Jones, Kate Bush, Coven, to Kip Tyler, and Stevie Nicks. She’ll be digging deep.

Above all, be sure to grab a mimosa ($3) while checking out our curated list of Capitol Hill community artists and crafters like Meghann Sommers’, Hunter Gatherer Vintage Shop, a whimsical collection from her travels; Kristina Cullen’s handcrafted jewelry line, Open the Cellar Door, a dark meticulously eerie array of beautiful accessories; and get in touch with your mystical side with Ambrosia’s Aura Readings.

ArtAche market takes over Chop Suey this Sunday, November 3rd from 1 to 6pm.

Capitol Hill smoke shops roll with shifting habits, regulations

IMG_7033

Aswad Janoo has run Choice Tobacco on Broadway since 2001 (Image: Alex Garland for CHS)

With the holidays fast approaching, Capitol Hill smoke shops are getting ready for the annual winter slowdown, culminating in the New Year’s resolution drop in sales. But after 17 years in the business Choice Tobacco shop owner Aswad Janoo knows his customers well. “It only lasts about a month,” he said.

Weathering the annual ebbs and flows of tobacco users is easy, but the independent smoke shop owners on Capitol Hill tell CHS that staying afloat amid changing habits and rising taxes has made the business tougher than ever. And while most of the shop owners say their businesses have become increasingly less profitable in recent years, there seem to be more shops than ever. Continue reading

CHS Pics | Hilloween 2013 from the trick-or-treat hot zone to Pike/Pine

IMG_7360IMG_7397Maybe in the same way that Thursday night has become the new Friday night or just because of the amount of steam people blew off between the weekend and Halloween night, Hilloween 2013’s October 31st celebration seemed like a more chill version of the neighborhood’s annual explosion of dress-up fun. Maybe the clogged roadways around Seattle cut down on visitors — though the trick-or-treat hot zone around 16th and Aloha was as crowded as ever. Maybe CHS has just been doing this too long. We can’t say what hyped excitements were going on inside the clubs, however.

Halloween Trick Or Treating in Capitol Hill, SeattleWe do know what was happening inside the houses near the trick-or-treat epicenter — we heard from a few houses that went through enough candy for 2,000 visitors last year and were exceeding that pace in 2013.

The night was comfortable and, for a change, drizzle free. The costume, as usual, were inspired. Here’s a look at Capitol Hill’s latest Halloween celebration from the little ones on parade on 16th Ave E to the big ones letting it all hang out at Pike and Broadway. We’ll add more as we get them. We’re also posting more on the CHS Facebook page. Let us know what you saw in comments.

Rebuilding a 15th Ave E house with a bookish history, Ada’s prepares for next chapter on Capitol Hill

Built with the bones, heart and soul of the old bookstore that called the 15th Ave E house home for more than 30 years, Ada’s Technical Books will celebrate the official opening of its new Capitol Hill location on Saturday.

“It feels like the space is different and new — but at the same time, there’s a lot of really cool things that we reused,” owner Danielle Hulton tells CHS. The overhauled 1922-built structure was the location of Horizon Books for more than three decades before it closed its 15th Ave E shop in 2009.

Bits and pieces of the old place including repurposed doors and salvaged wood fixtures are mixed in with the rebuilt store and new cafe space. There will be one checkout line for the entire experience — cafe and books. A central open “spine” aisle runs through the center connecting it all, Hulton says.IMG_6768

If you still haven’t decided what you’re doing for Halloween, here’s a few ways you can celebrate Capitol Hill’s Official Holiday with the rest of your neighbors: visit the trick-or-treat hot spots, enter a costume contest, or check out the carved pumpkins at the Conservatory Open House. If you don’t have a costume, be a zombie extra in a music video – makeup provided. Thursday is also one of the few days you can shuffle to the closest bar in your slippers, bathrobe, wifebeater and whitey tighties, call it your costume, and get served.

Weekend highlights:

artacheShow your support at The Comet Employees Benefit Concert at Chop Suey on Friday. Music performances by Hounds of the Wild Hunt, Daemon Lovers, Black Nite Crash, and more. Read more about what may or may not be happening with The Comet space and name.

To market, market, market: the Nuthole Flea Market on Saturday, and on Sunday the Broadway Farmers Market (11 am – 3 pm)  and ArtAche Market (1 pm – 6 pm).

doyleNbenShort Stories Live is a regular feature at Town Hall, and Sunday’s readings by professional actors are just right for the season: two horror stories and a mystery, all written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Benedict Cumberbatch is not expected, but a popular Seattle-based professional actor is. Doors at 1 pm, readings starts at 2 pm. Come, Watson, come!

Also on Sunday, Seattle Playwrights Collective’s performs a staged reading of Another Shore, a new play inspired by Shakespeare’s The Tempest. The Collective’s First Look Reading Series is held at Elliott Bay Book Company and starts at 6 pm.

Construction to start on Capitol Hill Station with walkway beneath Broadway

It’s finally happening. Sound Transit work crews are expected to break ground on the new Capitol Hill Station as early as Thursday. The first part of the station to be built will actually be the west entrance and walkway under Broadway that will connect the entrance to the main station. Currently the west entrance space, just south of Denny, is being used as a parking lot for Sound Transit work vehicles.8446763542_fcd93cb5ba_o-600x312

unnamedAccording to Sound Transit, crews will start by building a support system for the excavation of the walkway. Sound Transit warns the work will be “unavoidably noisy.”

Here’s what else Sound Transit says to expect:

  •   Intermittent noise to drill and secure the pilings.
  •  Limited truck traffic to and from the site to deliver materials.
  • The sidewalk in front of the site and traffic lanes on Broadway will remain open.
  •  Access to nearby businesses and residences will be maintained

The $1.9 billion, 3.1 mile, U-Link light rail extension connecting downtown to UW’s southeastern edge via Capitol Hill Station is slated to start running in 2016. In September CHS reported that the project to bore twin tunnels and complete stations at Montlake and on Broadway was six months ahead of schedule and $100 million below budget.

23-year-old found dead in E Pine Metro bus incident identified — UPDATE

-1

SPD traffic collision investigators document the scene at 12th and Pine Monday morning

The man who was struck by a Metro bus Monday morning at 12th and Pine has been identified as Peter Cooper.

UPDATE: CHS has learned that Cooper was an Irish citizen visiting from his home in Dublin, Ireland. According to John Keane, the Honorary Consul of Ireland in Seattle, Cooper had a brother living in Vancouver, B.C. and the two had come to visit Seattle together. Keane said Cooper’s family has arrived from Ireland to retrieve the man’s body.

“It’s tragic … The family was pretty shaken up about it,” he said.

While police continue to investigate the cause of death, one witness tells CHS Cooper was already lying in the street before the bus collision occured. Toby Francisco, manager at Mode of Fitness, told CHS he was walking to work down Pine when he spotted Cooper.

“I think that person may have already been dead,” he said. “I tried to see if they would flinch when the bus came, but they were motionless.” Continue reading

Hilloween 2013: Where to trick or treat on Capitol Hill

396189_10151268509166351_1950405802_n (1)There will always be Capitol Hill newbies. While the Hilloween veterans may know well that the area around 16th and 17th and Aloha is a crazy circus of trick-or-treat nuttiness, we’ll have to draw a map for those new to the neighborhood — or new to trick or treating. Below, is the slightly updated, barely adjusted but still 100% accurate CHS Trick or Treat Hot Zone Map:

View CHS Trick or Treat Hot Zone in a larger map

We’ve labeled the area where neighbors are prepared to greet more than 1,000 kids during the night and the decorations range from “Oh, that’s funny” to “OH MY GOD, RUN!” Also labeled are the areas of the Hill where CHS photographers will be wandering to capture images of the fun.

We also know there are other pockets of full-size Hershey bar good times around the Hill. If you have a favorite area you wouldn’t mind sharing or want to hype up your impressive decorations and jack-o-lanterns, let us know in comments, please.

There are a lot of new neighbors around Capitol Hill. Let’s help them have a happy Hilloween, too.
