Sawant says Seattle’s emergency shelters should remain open — UPDATE

Kshama Sawant, the Seattle City Council member representing District 3, says the city is set to close its emergency cold weather shelters Monday and called on Mayor Jenny Durkan to keep the facilities open.

“While the weather emergency has passed, the homelessness emergency continues,” Sawant writes in her letter to the mayor calling for the shelter space to remain available. “An ever-growing number of people in Seattle is being driven into homelessness by sky-high rents, evictions, and unaffordable housing. Human Service providers and workers do the best they can with resources chronically insufficient to the scale of the crisis.”

UPDATE: A representative for the city’s Human Services Department tells CHS that the “City’s plan has never been to close all its shelters on Tuesday.”

Wanted you to know that after the Human Service Depart made Its initial extension last Monday, we’ve been working with providers and the City departments who are running the 24/7 emergency shelters to keep them open longer. As you may know, we’re hosting a resource fair at the Seattle Center Exhibition Hall to connect people with services and resources so they can transition from emergency shelter City into the city or county’s ongoing shelter system, diversion or housing programs.

The rep said the city will have “more to share soon about the extensions.”

Monday night in Volunteer Park: Rally against Trump’s immigration national emergency — UPDATE: Shovel for democracy!

UPDATE 3:15 PM: Organizers are finding Volunteer Park is still pretty iced over and are putting out a call for volunteers to help make the space safe for Monday night’s rally. Here’s a message sent to CHS from Maggie Cuevas of SEA NO H8:

we have been hoping snow would melt from the venue for the protest tmrw. it has not. we’ll be staging at sculpture and could use the public’s help to clear sidewalks of snow to provide disabled access plus ensure safety for others. if at all possible to post a call for folks to come help out… in front of the black hole sun sculpture and sidewalks around the space.

They’ll be out there Sunday afternoon into the evening if you have a shovel and would like to lend a hand.

UPDATE 3:30 PM: Don’t head to the park just yet — organizers are working things out with Seattle Parks staff. UPDATE 5:20 PM: Permit issues have been worked out. Stop by Sunday night if you can help shovel. They’ll also be back out before the rally Monday starting at 3:30 PM.

Capitol Hill Community Post | Seattle Central hosts Day of Remembrance for interned Japanese American students

Seattle Central College will host a day of remembrance on Feb. 19, 2019 for the students whose lives and careers were derailed by the forced internment of Japanese Americans in 1942.

Starting at 10 a.m. Seattle Central will show the documentary “And Then They Came For Us” in the Broadway Performance Hall, followed by a discussion.

Beginning at noon, the campus will hold a candlelight remembrance at the campus’s historic Tsutakawa Fountain. Students in Japanese language classes will read the names of over 150 students of Japanese descent who were forced to leave Broadway High School, the school that later became Seattle Central College. Love and sex was in the air Thursday night as February’s Capitol Hill Art Walk got all mixed up and sloppy with Valentine’s Day. CHS stopped through Ghost Gallery’s The Art of Tarot III exhibition, Blue Cone Studio’s Erotica Art Walk and Love City Love’s Tongue Jockey Heart Breakers group show and found plenty of penises, vulvas, and boobs. With planned closure of Roy Street Coffee, Starbucks experiment on Capitol Hill will end — UPDATE

A Starbucks experiment that began ten years ago on Capitol Hill is set to come to an end. Roy Street Coffee and Tea will close this spring.

The global coffee giant hasn’t yet responded to CHS’s inquiry about the planned closure but customers of the Roy at Broadway cafe have been told the location will close at the end of April. UPDATE 2/19/19: Starbucks says they are leaving the location completely at the end of April:

As part of Starbucks standard course of business, we continually evaluate our business to ensure a healthy store portfolio. After careful consideration, we’ve made the difficult decision to close the store on Roy Street. Our last day at this location will be April 28, 2019. All Starbucks partners (employees) working at that store will have the opportunity to transfer to one of our locations in Seattle.

‘Rare central Seattle find’ — With $2.8M listing to sell some of its land, church neighboring Uncle Ike’s begins longterm plan for new home

Mount Calvary is selling land across the street on 23rd Ave for $2.8 million that will be the start of its plans to find a new home away from 23rd and Union

A $2.8 million real estate listing is a harbinger of things to come at 23rd and Union. The Mount Calvary Christian Center, which unsuccessfully battled the neighboring Uncle Ike’s pot shop in court, is beginning the process of finding a new home closer to the areas where most of its congregation now lives.

“We’re still very much a part of the community,” Nicole Bascomb of Bascomb Real Estate Group and a member of Mount Calvary tells CHS, “and we’re going to be there for a while.”

But change has begun. Bascomb, daughter of longtime Central District real estate agent Paul Bascomb, has listed her church’s Joshua Generation Teen Center property on the west side of 23rd Ave across from Mount Calvary for $2,824,250. Continue reading →

Activists may have lost in court but they haven’t given up on winning hearts in their battle against the new youth jail at 12th and Alder.

Saying she and fellow activists were there to celebrate Valentine’s Day and “what it means to love community and love young people,” activist and attorney Nikkita Oliver said a group gathered outside the under construction King County Youth and Family Justice Center would be delivering No New Youth Jail Valentines to officials and judges.

“We are here to uplift ourselves and love ourselves and say we’re not going to allow buildings like this to be built and invested in,” Oliver said. Continue reading →
