The overhauled building once home to legendary Capitol Hill hangout the Electric Tea Garden — and its daytime, downstairs neighbor, the equally legendary Artificial Limb Co. — will have new life in the new year.
CHS has learned that the duo behind the popular Juice Club pop-up series is making brick and mortar plans for the upgraded 1909-built building at the intersection of 14th and Pike just off E Madison.
Details on the Otherworld Wine Bar are still to be announced but the project from Juice Club partners Matt Lucas and Ben Chaykin has applied for a liquor license for the space and registered a new business with the state for the address for a venue offering beer and wine, plus off-premises sales.
It’s an exciting development for a fun corner of the Hill that has been mostly quiet since Seattle arts venue nomad Love City Love pulled out of the space in 2019. Previously, the building had been home to the prosthetics sales company and the Electric Tea Garden, a Capitol Hill hangout and nightlife venue that straddled the line between nightclub and underground club.
In the meantime, the property’s ownership has undertaken a full overhaul of the more than 100-year-old building on the edge of 14th Ave’s First African Methodist Episcopal Church and massive parking lot.
What, exactly, Otherworld will bring to the new space and when the new bar is planned to open have yet to be announced. CHS reported here in the pre-pandemic world on Juice Club plans for a project on E Denny Way that apparently never came to fruition.
In the meantime, Capitol Hill has established a healthy crop of wine-centric hangouts. Sustainability-focused Footprint Wine is keeping its taps flowing on E Madison. Light Sleeper and Wide Eyed Wines are now resident in Chophouse Row. Natural wine shop Glinda replaced Juicebox Cafe on 12th Ave. Flight Wine + Chocolate landed at Pike and 13th. Self-pour wine and beer bar concept Rapport has things dialed in on northern Broadway. Blotto sells bottles along with its pies on 12th Ave. And natural wine-focused bar La Dive has brought “chambong” champagne bongs and a dark, comfortable, but pink bar-topped vibe to E Pike.
This time around, the paperwork and the investments run deeper and it looks likely we’ll see corks popped at “Natural wine parties” on this edge of the Pike/Pine nightlife district in 2022.
Otherworld Wine Bar is being planned for 1406 E Pike. Watch instagram.com/otherworld.bar for updates.
