The Seattle Department of Transportation still has a long road ahead to meeting the city’s “Vision Zero” goals but new street projects are addressing some of the most notoriously dangerous intersections around Capitol Hill.

Over the weekend, SDOT crews tackled work to finally overhaul the busy 23rd and John intersection, adding new protected turn signals and new pedestrian safety elements to one of the crossings with the most red-light crashes in the city.

“The new intersection will have protected left turns for northbound, southbound, and eastbound traffic,” SDOT said about the work. “People making a left turn from northbound or southbound 23rd Ave E and from eastbound E John St will have a separated turn lane and dedicated turn signal.” Continue reading

Design review: With ‘quirkiness’ and trees on the table, eight stories proposed at 13th and John

The concept for 13th and John

Part of the new wave of eight-story — and smaller —  projects coming to the E Olive Way-E John corridor

Capitol Hill’s East John-East Olive Way corridor continues to fill with redevelopment including an eight-story 13th Ave E project slated to come before the East Design Review Board later this week.

The board will also be considering a proposal for neighbors in Eastlake that will replace a commercial strip home to a grocery market and restaurants with a new six-story apartment building.

Nearly a year after its first go-round, a plan to bring an 8-story, 49 unit building to 13th Ave E will come before the board. The proposal, which had its first design review meeting last October, is proposed by G2 Development and designed by Skidmore Janette.

The site is at 131 13th Ave E., just south of the corner of East John. On the block currently are a mix of single-family and multi-family homes. The proposal calls for tearing down an existing two-story building and detached garage. The structure was built as a single-family home in 1912, but has since been carved up into three apartments. The 1903-built single family home on the corner would remain in place and neighbor the new project. Continue reading

Man charged in apartment building gunfire that locked down blocks of Capitol Hill

Image sent to CHS by a resident in a neighboring building of SWAT officers outside the Holiday Apartments building during Saturday’s lockdown

Police say the multi-hour search and standoff at a Capitol Hill apartment building last Saturday night was sparked by gunfire from a fourth floor balcony that damaged two apartment units and the gunman’s threat against a building resident who came into the building hallway only to find the suspect pointing a gun at him.

Nile Wenzlick, 58, has been charged with second degree assault, malicious mischief, and one count of discharging a firearm in the incident that played out after reports of gunfire from a balcony of the Holiday Apartments at 10th and John.

During the outburst, police say Wenzlick fired shots that damaged a fourth and second floor apartment unit before knocking on the door of a second floor unit. The resident told police he opened his door and saw his third floor neighbor standing in front of his doorway with a pistol at his hip, pointing the gun directly at the man. The resident quickly slammed and locked the door. Continue reading

SPD locks down area around 10th and John after reported gunfire — UPDATE

SWAT at the scene — Thanks to a reader for the pic

Picture from a locked down resident down the street from the Holiday building

Seattle Police and SWAT closed down the area around Broadway and John early Saturday evening as officers responded to reported gunfire in the area and were asking people to stay inside.

According to East Precinct radio updates, police were watching a possible suspect on an upper level of the E John Holiday Apartments building as officers locked down the area and closed off nearby streets.

UPDATE 8:35 PM: The situation has continued into its third hour with police spending much of the evening working to determine the location of the suspect. A man originally thought to be a possible suspect was finally contacted and determined to not be the person seen earlier firing a firearm from the building. The search shifted to a different floor and a man matching the suspect description. Just after 8 PM, police said via radio updates that the man had made contact but he was no longer answering his phone. The search has since transitioned into a standoff with police working to contact the man. Meanwhile, parts of the building near his unit have been cleared.

UPDATE 9:50 PM: The suspect was taken into custody without incident, surrendering after SWAT deployed gas into the unit. Seattle Fire was called to the scene to treat the man for exposure to oleoresin capsicum, the active ingredient in pepper spray. Earlier in the incident, loud explosions were reported as flash bang grenades were deployed to try to stir the suspect from the unit. Meanwhile, police found evidence from the shooting including at least one shell casing outside the building.

“Resident safety is our first and foremost priority,” a spokesperson for Community Roots Housing, the developer and property manager of the building said. “We are deeply grateful to the Holiday resident community for responding quickly to the situation, and we are working to provide support in the wake of this traumatic event.”

UPDATE 4/25/2022 10:15 AM: The 58-year-old suspect has been booked into King County Jail for investigation of malicious mischief. He has been a resident of the apartment building since at least 2008 according to state records. A search of King County and Seattle court records show no recent run-ins with the law and no criminal history for the suspect. SPD says two handguns were recovered from the man’s apartment.

Shots were reported just before 6 PM Saturday. UPDATE: SPD says a suspect reportedly fired shots from his balcony around 5:45 PM but there were no reported injuries.

Large crowds of standersby were reported as SPD was working to clear the area.

The scene on the southeast corner of 10th and John is near multiple apartment buildings and Capitol Hill Station.

There were no immediate reports of injuries.

UPDATE: “Large police presence in the 1000 block of East John Street as officers attempt to contact a suspect who fired a gun from a balcony,” SPD reported around 6:45 PM. “No injuries reported at this time. Please stay out of the area if possible.”

No charges for shooter as alleged suspect killed in Capitol Hill armed robbery identified — UPDATE

Thanks to a CHS reader for this picture from the scene

The 24-year-old shot dead at an E John bus stop early Tuesday morning on Capitol Hill has been identified but few details have been publicly released in the shooting as authorities complete their investigation and weigh any charges in the case.

The King County Medical Examiner’s office says the 24-year-old has been identified as Jayson Williams. Williams died early Tuesday after being shot in reported self defense during an attempted armed robbery at 10th and John.

Investigators say Williams died of multiple gunshot wounds. Arriving officers reported the 24-year-old down and shot in the stomach, according to East Precinct radio reports from the night. He was pronounced dead by the time he was taken to Harborview by Seattle Fire. A second male involved in the alleged stick-up reportedly fled on foot and was not injured by the gunfire. Signal changes at Broadway and John should make everyone’s trips easier

One of Capitol Hill’s busiest intersections should get easier to navigate this year, whether you’re in a car, on foot, or in a wheelchair. Broadway E and E John is slated to get a brand new set of traffic signals as part of the Seattle Department of Transportation’s Neighborhood Street Fund grant program. With the signal upgrades will come separate turn signals; drivers heading east on John Street or west on Olive Way will be asked to wait to turn left until pedestrian traffic clears the intersection.

Brie Gyncild of Central Seattle Greenways called the grant application a “last resort” in an SDOT blog post about the project. The city looked at including the signal upgrade with a previous Neighborhood Street Fund grant that made spot improvements to John and Thomas Street across all of Capitol Hill, but couldn’t make it happen due to high cost.

“The Neighborhood Street Fund was a last resort, because we have been trying to get these improvements made for a while,” Gyncild said. “This intersection has seen injuries and close calls. We all recognized the need for change here, but it’s expensive because signals are expensive and there are a lot of things that needed to change alongside the new signal, such as ADA upgrades to curb ramps.” Continue reading

Latest Capitol Hill homeless sweep clears Williams Place Park

(Image: @parkupine via Instagram)

Capitol Hill’s tiny Williams Place Park was the latest public space to be cleared of tents and personal belongings as homeless encampment sweeps continue in Seattle.

The treed square at 15th and John was swept Thursday, Seattle Parks confirms. The park will now be closed through June 17th “in order for Parks and Recreation staff to address any damage to the park and reestablish vegetation,” a spokesperson tells CHS.

Thursday’s clearance follows a mid-May sweep of Broadway Hill Park and a much larger clearance effort in April at Miller Playfield as the nearby Meany Middle School prepared to welcome students back for in-person learning after months of at-home instruction during the COVID-19 crisis. SPD investigating 15th and John stabbing

Seattle Police was searching for the suspect in a reported stabbing near 15th and John Sunday night.

Police and Seattle Fire were called to the neary Safeway around 6:30 PM to a report of a man in his 30s suffering from wounds to the abdomen and a head laceration.

According to East Precinct radio updates, the assault victim came to the store from the encampment in Williams Place Park.

Police were searching for a suspect last seen leaving the area on foot westbound on John.

There were no immediate arrests.

A separate SPD response to a nearby Capitol Hill store involving a man in crisis reportedly armed with a knife did not appear to be related to the stabbing incident at 15th and John. SPD took the person in that incident into custody without incident, according to radio updates.

The 15th and John victim was reported to be alert and conscious as he was transported for further treatment at Harborview.
